Pediatric Cardiology

It is hard living with a cardiac condition. It is just as hard as living with a person who has a cardiac problem. Care should be given and the patient's special needs need to be provided for. However, there is nothing worse than living with a child who has a cardiac condition.

If adults find it hard to get by living with a heart ailment, a child whose suffering is much more heart felt and much more painful. Children need extra attention and care, especially if they are ill and suffering from a very serious heart condition. As we all know, the heart is basically the center of our body?s system. Once it goes out of rhythm, other parts will also follow.

Pediatric cardiology is a special branch of medicine and health care. This branch provides assistance and care for children who were unlucky enough to possess a life-threatening condition like a cardiac condition. People who are into this practice possess compassion, and they try to meet all the needs of children who bear this illness. Physicians and doctors who are involved in pediatric cardiology do their best to provide the best kind of care to control any heart diseases that children may suffer from. Pediatric cardiology is a specialized branch that not all hospitals and clinics are equipped to deal with.

The hospitals, clinics and health care facilities that have pediatric cardiology under their wing provide the best kind of services for children with hereditary or acquired heart conditions. Pediatric cardiology includes the diagnosis of heart diseases as well as treatment for this ailment and offers a team approach to ensure a better diagnosis, as well as treatment for the pediatric patient.

Top Ten Tips to "Beat the Heat"

Finding ways to ?beat the heat? can be about far more than just comfort, especially for those of us who have a chronic health condition. When you have multiple sclerosis for example, staying cool (or as cool as possible) over the summer can mean the difference between maintaining energy, equilibrium and perhaps even mobility and spending the season in what I call ?horizontal mode?. If you live with depression as I do, staying comfortable can mean that life goes on as normal instead of melting into a pile of lethargy and total lack of motivation.

Here are ten tips to help you stay cool when the temperature soars. Try as many as you can to lower your internal thermometer.

1.Air conditioning

Whether that means central air or a window unit, air conditioning is going to be your best friend. I have a window unit in my bedroom for maximum benefit while sleeping. If air conditioning isn?t possible, a dehumidifier and a couple of fans can help. By removing some of the humidity from the air and creating a current, the temperature will feel cooler. When all else fails, go to the mall, the library or any place that has air conditioning.

2.Keep the sun out

During the summer months, the mid-day sun is a killer. Be sure to keep the window shades drawn from around 11:00 am till at least 2:00 pm. The sun shining into the house during this period can leave the temperature much warmer in the afternoon and evening than it needs to be.

3.Sleep alone

I know, it sounds a little lonely but it?ll be much cooler than that abundance of body heat that comes with a spouse, a child, a dog or even the family cat sharing the bed with you.

4.Wear cotton

Cotton takes perspiration away from the skin leaving you drier and more comfortable. Go for light coloured cotton clothes, cotton nightwear and bedding. Cotton sheets will not only absorb night sweats, but will also permit your skin to breath, allowing you to be more comfortable and less restless. We all know that better sleep leads to more energy and a healthier attitude during the day.

5.Cool showers & baths

There?s nothing more satisfying than a cool bath or shower when your body temperature is elevated. I?ve even found that between showers running cold water over my wrists (or any other pulse point) for a few minutes at a time cools me down. When I can?t sleep at night because of the heat, I fill a pan with cold water and soak my feet. It really helps to lower the body temperature.

6.Keep exercise moderate

Exercise is so important for our general well being. I know that it?s temping to skip it entirely when it?s hot out but this can be detrimental at so many levels. The best rule of thumb would be to keep it moderate. Don?t push yourself to working up an all out sweat. Keep it at a moderate level and be sure to take a cool shower afterwards to bring your body temperature back down.

7.Try swimming

If at all possible, choose swimming as your form of exercise during the summer. Swimming is a wonderful activity because it works all the major muscle groups while maintaining a lower body temperature.

8.Seek shade

When you?re going to be outside, always sit in the shade. Even better, sit in the shade where there?s a breeze if possible.

9.Wear a hat

The sun beating down on your head has a great deal of impact on your overall body temperature. Always wear a hat when you?re out in the sun. And if you?re going to be in the sun for more than a minute or so, always wear sunscreen.

10.Try cooling clothing

There are a number of manufacturers now making the cooling vests, hats, etc. Last summer my husband even came home with some cooling bandanas. They have some form of gel crystals in them that retain cold when wet. You just run it under cold water and tie it around your head. As long as it stays wet, it stays cool ? Neat!

Can You Drink Your Way To Good Health?

Many years ago I became convinced of the need to take vitamin and mineral supplements. Although I tried to eat healthy meals, mixing salads, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains as wisely as I could, numerous studies pointed out the need to add nutritional supplements to my diet.

Major Study

The major study that caught my attention most strongly was the 1977-1978 USDA National Food Consumption Survey (Crocetti and Guthrie, 1982). This study surveyed the 3-day dietary records of over 21,500 individuals. Among other findings the study showed that not one person consumed 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance for the top ten nutrients.

That was a rather shocking finding. Not one single person! I prided myself in eating well, but I decided that it would be a good idea to supplement my meals with additional vitamins and minerals.

Taking Tablets

I started out by taking a single multivitamin daily. Then, over the years I added additional tablets of antioxidants, namely vitamin C and vitamin E. In more recent years I added calcium tablets and B vitamin tablets to my routine. As you can guess, the result was that I was taking 5 tablets of supplements twice a day.

Does that sound familiar to you? That?s a lot of tablets to swallow. Taking that many tablets each day was never pleasant for me. Many times I wished that there was an easier way to take the supplements that I felt I needed.

Liquid Supplements

Then a friend introduced me to a nutritional supplement that I could drink. Now that made sense. A good, potent liquid nutritional was certainly much easier and much tastier than a handful of tablets.

The convenience and good taste of the liquid was enough to convince me to abandon the tablet delivery system. But I learned further that the liquid form of the vitamins and minerals was more apt to be easily absorbed by my body than were the old tablets.

Absorption

Unfortunately tablets do not always digest fully in the stomach. Sometimes they only digest partially as they pass through the digestive system which allows only part of their potency to be absorbed by the cells. In fact, the Physician?s Desk Reference, a highly respected reference book, once reported that the absorbency of vitamin tablets can be as low as 10%. What that means is that very little of the available nutrients are actually utilized by the body and its cells.

By contrast, vitamins and minerals in a liquid form can be absorbed by the body?s cells at a much higher rate. As high as 95%. The liquid is more easily digested and absorbed by the digestive system than tablets are. Further, the absorbency of the liquid vitamins starts at the tongue and beneath the tongue. This sublingual delivery helps to get the nutritional benefit to the cells much faster.

How does this work? Take nitroglycerin for example. Nitroglycerin is effective for combating anginal chest pains associated with heart disease. An effective way to deliver the nitroglycerin is to place it beneath the tongue at the first sign of chest pain. This sublingual delivery gets the nitroglycerin into the bloodstream and to the chest pain much faster than it would if it had to be swallowed, digested, and absorbed into the bloodstream through the digestive system.

Similarly, vitamins and minerals will absorb into the bloodstream and to the cells much faster in liquid or spray form. For example, vitamin B-12 is an important vitamin, but as we get older we lose the stomach secretions necessary to digest and absorb the vitamin through the normal digestive process. The solution to the problem is to deliver vitamin B-12 in either a spray or a sublingual form. That way the potency of the vitamin is delivered quickly to the cells and the digestive system is bypassed.

How To Choose

Taste really counts. If it doesn?t taste good, you won?t be likely to take the supplement on a regular basis. If it tastes good, you will. So will your children.

There are numerous liquid nutritional supplements available on the market. Typical flavors include orange-mango, cherry, and cranberry among others. My personal favorite is a rich cranberry concentrate. Not only does the taste make my mouth water, but it is good to know that cranberries have properties that help to cleanse and to remove toxins from the urinary tract.

A good liquid nutritional supplement should use aloe vera as its base rather than water. Liquid aloe vera contains more than 39 essential vitamins and minerals and all 23 amino acids. Further, liquid aloe vera is a powerful healer. It is one of the best stomach and intestine cleansers known. And it is a wonderful oxygenator, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory.

Most good liquid nutritional supplements will utilize sea vegetation as its source of vitamins and minerals. A good mix of sea vegetation will contain an important natural balance of all of the essential vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and enzymes. The concept of balance is very important here, because the body?s cells will utilize the nutrients much more efficiently if they are supplied in a balance normally found in nature. Further, sea vegetation can be harvested from cold, pure seawater that is free of contaminants. The body?s cells will appreciate that.

Personal Recommendation

I have sampled numerous liquid supplements and I am pleased to report that liquid supplements have grown in popularity and improved in taste and effectiveness during the past few years.

Seasilver is my personal favorite liquid nutritional and I recommend it highly to everyone. Seasilver has adopted the highest manufacturing standards and has found a blend of sea vegetation, aloe vera, and several other impressive and effective ingredients that form an outstanding foundational health supplement. And it has the great cranberry/cherry taste that I prefer. The result is that Seasilver is a powerful nutritional supplement that provides the body with nourishment at the cellular level.

Answer To The Question

So, the answer to the question originally asked is that yes you can drink your way to good health. If you have ever tired of consuming vitamin tablets or if you?ve ever wondered about the potency of artificially formulated tablets, you owe it to yourself to try a good liquid nutritional supplement. Try a bottle or two. Here?s to your good health.

Who Wants To Know The Truth About Weight Loss Fat Loss And Metabolism?

?Who Wants To Know The Truth About Weight Loss, Fat Loss And Metabolism??

-To reach a great height, a person needs to have great depth? Anonymous.

My hope with any program that I design for an individual is extraordinarily basic; it is to simply endow the client with the reality and verity regarding weight loss or more specificly, fat loss. Exercise and eating right have been both the passion and pursuit of the bulk of what makes up my life. I have no ulterior motives and no hidden agenda to sway or dissuade my clients or readers. Although my companies; Synergy Fitness Systems, Synergy Global Health Solutions and www.kreatefitness.com do carry a line of super-premium supplements, it is only because I was fed up with the poor quality and low nutrient factors of what the ?MEGA? and ?MLM? suppliers were pawning off on the consumer, including myself, that I chose to invest my own hard-earned cash and provide this ?super premium? product line to those who were willing to become educated and enlightened about the efficacy of what they were taking into their bodies. Incidentally, this was after more than 5 years of research and development, production and a lifetime of application and education. I have said this before and I will say it again... I am not a guru nor do I care to be! Call me a pitch-man... I am... For the TRUTH! I will let my character; integrity and my honesty speak for itself. I am successful at what I do because of my ethics, values, and principles and deep-seated knowing, that what I am doing here is bigger than me, it is bigger than my current level of comprehension, that what I am doing is right and it is the right thing... It is REAL! So are my programs. Integrity is the cornerstone of my profession. I am not the first guy in the wellness, fitness or preventative health care industries to tell you that magazines are generally considered one of the most credible sources for exercise, nutrition and fitness information. But that's not always the case. You cannot believe everything you read.... One more time, let me say it again; you cannot believe everything you read! Quite a portion of magazine publishers own supplement companies, who would of thunk? By strategically placing information about new supplement breakthroughs into what is in fact an advertorial, not an editorial, the buy-ability is to a great extent more believable. That is exactly why magazines have become the ideal instrument for selling weight loss products and nutritional supplements. And so we have witnessed and can now bear testimony to the clever birth of the supplement catalog. Amazing?isn?t it?

Furthermore, in the game of losing body fat and that is the primary objective of not only my clients, but weight loss consumers on a whole, a daily caloric deficit must be achieved. This is a critical component and is undeviating. More simply put, you must expend more calories in a given day than you consume. There are three ways you can create this calorie deficit: 1) the most obvious is to decrease your caloric intake from food and increase the amount of calories expended daily through exercise, or you can break them down separately; 2) by increasing the amount of calories you burn daily through exercise or; 3) by decreasing the amount of calories consumed daily through food. Again, I repeat the first method is the most obvious and most effectual, although of the two components involved, the process of calorie expenditure is superior and is undoubtedly the more efficient method. It is also emphatic that you maintain muscle mass, while burning fat, the loss of muscle is not an option! As absurd as it may be, what you are truly looking to achieve is... Or more specifically what the objective is...is to eat the right foods for sustaining bodily integrity and employ exercise as your most significant fat-loss tool. Incongruously, what is practiced more often than not is the dead-opposite... Little to no exercise accompanied by severe caloric reduction (starvation). This both slows the metabolism and inhibits the ability to maintain lean mass. Exercise allows you to establish a caloric deficit and burn fat without diminishing your metabolism. Synergy is defined as an exponential multiplication of efficacious parts, elements or pieces, by placing two (2) or more effective components together... The act of combining strength training (intense-resistance-exercise) and cardio-respiratory exercise with adequate, abundant nutrition and proper hydration will result in exponentially multiplied results! SYNERGY, Baby!!!

Unfortunately, the most common approach to ?fat-loss? is erroneous and incorrect. Commercialized and I mean to include a good deal of those; Dr. This-guy and Dr. That-guy authored or endorsed diets all contain the same or a similar yet masked versions of the same derogatory component... Exceedingly low caloric intake! This results in instantaneous ?weight-loss?! Fantastic! Right? Wrong! Here is what is really going on... The loss of lean-mass and water! Now if body fat is what you are attempting to lose than why would you want to lose lean-mass, which is where ?efficient? metabolism emanates from in the first place? You don?t! It is physiologically impossible to lose fat for any prolonged period of time by starving yourself.

The human body, which indeed works in direct accord with the human mind, is unambiguously too intelligent for this to work. In an attempt to starve fat, you will in-fact starve muscle. Moreover, since muscle is where your metabolism emanates from, it is the prime element of your ?prospective? efficient metabolism. The truth is, not only is muscle a more efficient fuel source, but it is your body?s preferred choice of fuel, when starvation is invoked!

On a deeper level the greater injustice going on is that you are slowing down your metabolism even further or perhaps initiating the process of ?revoking? your metabolic rights depending on how many times and how severely you have ?starved? your metabolism! Now that is not to say there is no hope for you, believe me... There is! But I must stress this point. When your body enters starvation mode, fat loss will severely slow or even cease as your body tries to conserve energy. This is fact! But you say conservation is good right Kurt? The answer again is wrong! Not where human physiological or metabolic function is concerned. I would venture to say that economy on a whole is not a good thing; I mean I would like to think that if I give more, more will come back to me... And If I give, I shall receive! Your body or more distinctly, your metabolism functions under this LAW! Ask Lance Armstrong, the man with the lowest resting heart rate of any living man. He is the fittest, most ?fuel-efficient? man on earth... WHY? Because he has mastered the art of spending! The harder he works, the more efficient his body responds and the better he becomes... Thus, so can YOU! Less is not best! Provide adequately, yet abundantly and appropriately (nutrition/hydration/sleep), spend...spend...spend (exercise, both aerobic and anaerobically) and do them in unity and accord of each other.

Until next time?

Prostate Problems Symptoms Causing Concern

Some blood in the urine? burning sensations? or even inability to urinate? all relatively serious problems which might also implicate the prostate.

BLOOD IN THE URINE

Just a few drops of blood can make the urine held in your bladder turn a red color. We?re talking about haematuria. Don?t panic ? there?s no danger ? the presence of blood is more disturbing than dangerous. Drink a lot of water to rince it out then go and see your doctor. Haematuria may be due to one of the following:

? simple congestion of the prostate
? a unirary infection inflaming the wall of the bladder and making it bleed
? stones in the bladder which are irritating the wall
? following some strenuous exercise

When the prostate is the cause, during urinating the blood will usually arive first followed by clearer urine. Such haematuria might occur from time to time and are not dangerous. However, if frequent, surgical intervention on the prostate might one day be required.

But note that, if you do have blood in the urine, it is of vital importance that its origin is determined. This will require a thorough urological examination including an ultrasound scan, intravenous pyelogram and fibrescopy of the bladder to determine or eliminate possible other causes (such as a bladder tumour or stones, or a kidney or ureteral tumor).

A BURNING SENSATION

If you feel a burning sensation while urinating, this is probably due to a urinary infection which is irritating the bladder or urethra. The burning is often accompanied by a frequent desire to urinate ? up to a dozen times a night. However the urine flow will be week since the bladder hasn?t had time to refill. Occasionally the irritation will be so great that the bladder might bleed. You might also have a fever which can signify that bacteria have penetrated the prostate (with associated risk of septicemia).

Such a urinary infection is diagnosed by a urine analysis and is rapidy treated with antibiotics. For urinary infections with fever, the treatmant will last about three weeks.

ACUTE URINE RETENTION

You haven?t urinated for over 24 hours, the bladder is full, blocked; you want to urinate, but can?t; your lower abdomen is distended and painful to the touch. Yes, the bladder is capable of holding over a litre (2 pints) of urine! This is acute urine retention.

There?s no point in trying to force it or waiting. There?s only one thing to do: insert a probe into the urethra and empty the bladder. You?ll have immediate relief. Contact your own doctor or go immediately to your local hospital emergency department. The probe will remain in place for a few days to enable the bladder to relax. When it?s removed you?ll have about a 50% chance of returning to a normal urination frequency. But beware of any recurrence.

Acute urine retention can indicate prostate hypertrophy as yet undiagnosed due to the absence of other symptoms. It can also occur in someone undergoing prostate treatment, where it would indicate an evolution in the illness, and surgery might be necessary.

Once again, you should be aware of other factors which might lead to urine retention, such as taking certain cold and bronchial medicines, constipation, some anaesthetics, and excessive alcohol consummation.

So there you are. The above three problems are not uncommon, but they are often the cause of much undue worry for those suffering from them. Of course, they should all be reported immediately to your doctor and thoroughly investigated. But I hope that this short article will help to put your mind at rest and that in many cases, your problems might not be so severe or life-threatening as first imagined.

How to Properly Care for Your Skin from the Experts

The skin, as we are all taught in high school, is the largest and the most visible tissue in the human body. Of course it is. It covers us entirely from head to toe. It is our protective casing that allows us to move freely and gives us feedback on external textures, climate and other things associated with the sense of touch. The pores in our skin also helps us to release internal wastes through perspiration. These, among other benefits and special characteristics, make our skin one of the most important parts of our body ? and therefore one of the first things to take care of.

We want our skin to be supple and smooth, yet still strong and healthy. There have been countless skin care products and treatments developed over the years that have helped a lot of people and solved many skin problems. However, it?s one thing to cure skin damage and it?s another to protect it. When you were born, your skin was nothing short of perfect. Therefore, the first logical thing to do is to protect your skin from any kind of damage or unwanted reaction from external factors.

Nonetheless, there are numerous things that can damage your skin even without you knowing it. Some of these would be climate or weather, unknown allergies from food or drink, and the most dreaded skin damager of all ? age. Though it?s possible to stay away from harsh climates and food you are allergic to, it is sad to note that age is something that we simply cannot avoid. Everything solid in this world wears out with age. However, this doesn?t mean we can?t do anything about it.

There are various products and treatments available for making your skin look younger and less wrinkled. Nevertheless, the important thing is to keep your skin as healthy as possible all the time while you?re young, in order to effectively help in slowing down the ageing process. The more careless you are with your skin, the faster it?ll develop wrinkles and look older.

Leading dermatologist Greta Winslow of Wade Skin Clinic advises ??.always remember that healthy skin is the result of a healthy lifestyle. And by healthy lifestyle, we mean a balanced diet, lots of water (less sodas and carbonated drinks), sufficient vitamins, regular exercise, enough sleep, no smoking, less alcohol consumption, and effective management of daily stress. It?s also good to suggest that the use of tanning beds and some topical skin treatments or medication that are said to provide ?instant? results may be more harmful than helpful. It?s always good to consult with a skin doctor for things you aren?t sure of?

In addition to these lifestyle tips, skin experts say that the best way to care for your skin is to cleanse it as often as possible, or at least on a daily basis. They note, however, that the choice of skin cleanser is critical in having healthy skin. Choose the one that?s mild and with less chemicals. Make up must be totally removed before cleansing and always use only lukewarm water.

Some Healthy Nutrition

Below are listed some foods that are containing ingredients of healthy nutrition.

Berries are incredible antioxidants

Ah, the sweet taste of fresh berries! Berries are actually good for you and contain plant nutrients called anthocyanidins. Some of these have high levels of resveratrol, which helps fight heart disease and cancer. The next time you want something sweet, juicy, and good for you, reach for blueberries, grapes, or strawberries, and do not feel guilty!

Tasty Almonds

If you love nuts, then you are in luck. Almonds are not only delicious and make a great snack food, medical studies show they contain as much protein per ounce as red meat. In addition, they aid in reducing the risk of heart attacks by up to 50%. The next time you need something crunchy, reach for a handful of almonds.

Flaxseed

A great way to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system is by adding flaxseed to your daily diet. Flaxseed actually contains what is called alpha-linolenic acid, which is a fatty acid essential in controlling blood pressure. They have a benefit of helping with digestion; just make sure the flaxseed is crushed for easier consumption and absorption.

Saucy but Healthy

Eating bland foods is boring, unsatisfying, and if that is what your diet consists of, more than likely, you will be off it shortly after you start. If you enjoy good tasting food, some sauces and spices can enhance your food while not adding calories to your food. The next you grill meat, consider using one of these:

?Reduced-salt Soy Sauce

?Mustard

?Salsa

?Worcestershire Sauce

?Vinegar (this comes in wonderful flavors)

?Teriyaki Sauce

?Tomato Sauce

?Hot Sauce

Some like it Hot

Hot, spicy foods that contain curry, chilies, or other hot peppers such as cayenne, help to trigger endorphins. These hormones are what make people feel good and well balanced. In fact, endorphins are like a natural morphine that helps ease pain and provide a sense of well being. The next time you are feeling a little down or have some minor pain, try eating something spicy.

Stick with Whole Wheat

Whole wheat is actually better for you. It offers more fiber, which helps reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diverticulosis, diabetes to name a few. When possible, set aside the white flour and bread and reach for products that are made from oats, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, rye, brown rice, millet, and wheat.

What are Flavonoids?

These are oestrogen-like compounds found in plants that act as hormone blockers any place in the body where there are excess hormones that could cause such cancers such as breast cancer. Flavonoids are also strong antioxidants, which can be found in foods such as beans, onions, broccoli, apples, and soy products.

Syndrome X

1 in 4 have Syndrome X: Do You?

Syndrome X is an epidemic sweeping across the US. Currently, 25% of American adults are afflicted with the syndrome, though they

might not be aware of it. Also known as Insulin Resistance, a diagnosis of Syndrome X indicates a pre-diabetic state as well as an

increased risk factor for developing type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Syndrome X is a powerful wake up call and

an opportunity to make changes in your life to avoid the possibility of developing a serious and deadly health problem in the future.

What is Syndrome X?

Syndrome X is insulin resistance. It acts by interfering with glucose (sugar) delivery to your body?s cells. Normally, ordinary levels of insulin will escort glucose into your cells. With Syndrome X, your cell receptors do not recognize the insulin hormone and deny it access to deposit the glucose. With nowhere for the glucose to go, sugar begins to build up in your bloodstream. Your pancreas, unaware of the insulin resistance, steps up insulin production in an effort to pump out enough of the hormone to remedy the situation.

The overproduction of insulin inundates your bloodstream, potentially interfering with your kidney?s ability to process salt, which can raise your blood pressure. Levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in your bloodstream may also increase which can cause damage to your coronary arteries. Left untreated, Syndrome X?s insulin resistance can ultimately result in type II diabetes and dramatically increases your risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to all diseases related to the cardiovascular system. It includes dysfunctions of the heart, arteries and veins that supply oxygen to vital life-sustaining areas of the body such as the brain, the heart itself and other vital organs. CVD comes in many forms and may not only damage blood vessels all over the body, but the hearts malfunctioning can also cause harm to almost every aspect of a person?s health.

Common, yet serious conditions that fall under the CVD umbrella are: atherosclerosis, angina, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attack, heart failure, stroke and arrhythmia. Impacting the serious danger of such conditions is the fact that the majority of the cardiovascular diseases are sub-clinical, meaning that they often remain undetected for years, only becoming recognized once the situation has escalated to the point of requiring immediate and extreme attention.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US. One in four adults are afflicted with some form of the disease, which amounts to roughly 61 million Americans. CVD is attributed to 42% of all deaths, taking almost 1 million lives each year. Every 30 seconds one person dies from CVD.

Type II Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic health problem stemming from elevated blood sugar. The body?s metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats lead directly to the production of glucose, otherwise known as blood sugar. Glucose is needed to supply energy to every cell in the body. If glucose levels become too elevated, it presents a toxic danger to every organ in the body. In type II diabetes the cells are resistant to insulin, blocking the glucose?s entry.

While a half a million people die annually from complications associated with diabetes, others suffer serious health complications.

Diabetics often succumb to diabetic retinopathy, a condition that impairs the tiny blood vessels of the retina and causes approximately 12,000 new cases of blindness a year. Diabetics are also at increased risk of cataracts and glaucoma, heart disease, stroke, and peripheral neuropathy in which the body?s nerves are damaged.

According to the ADA, two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease and stroke. A study reported in the November 2003 issue of Diabetes Care found that young people diagnosed with type II diabetes between the ages of 18 and 44 are 14 times more likely to suffer a heart attack than those without diabetes.

What I Recommend to My Patients

In my medical practice I take a preventative approach to illness and disease. I believe strongly in the words of Hypocrites, ?Let food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food,? and always attempt to treat my patients with all natural alternatives before resorting to prescription medication. I have been recommending Metabolic Rx made by Perfectly Healthy to my patients with Syndrome X for years and with great success.

Metabolic Rx is a blend of glandular tissues, vitamins, minerals, herbs, digestive enzymes and antioxidants formulated to support the pancreas function and to help regulate the blood sugar levels. The all-natural vitamins combine together to aid in converting carbohydrates, proteins and fats into fuel for the body and to boost energy levels. The minerals are included to help metabolize glucose, boosting the immune system and the herbs help to reduce blood sugar levels and bring down blood pressure. Metabolic Rx also contains a powerful antioxidant to increase the cell?s glucose uptake and a digestive enzyme to help with the breakdown of starches and sugars from daily meals. The ingredients in Metabolic Rx are superior to any other product available on the market today, and I find that it has wonderful results with my patient?s.

Syndrome X does not have to be a death sentence, but it should be a viewed as a serious wake up call. If you are one of the millions of Americans afflicted with Syndrome X, take immediate action to prevent the onset of diabetes and heart disease. Only you can take the first step to good health! Call your doctor today.

Mesothelioma Treatment Costs: What You Should Know

Mesothelioma is a cancerous affliction. It is primarily of three types, pleural, peritoneal and pericardial. Like every form of malignant cancer, the overall cost of its treatment may be huge. A person may be required to spend thousands of dollars each month. The cost of treatment of the disease depends upon many factors, i.e., age, side effects of the treatment, the effects of the treatment on the overall health and the chances of survival, as well as the stage and gravity of affliction and the organs over which it has spread. Then a variety of treatments are required to attack the malady.

Radiation therapy is used to attack the tumors with high-powered radiation, which is produced by certain radiation emitting materials or machines. Surgery is used to remove the afflicted organ or its part and chemotherapy is used to kill the cancer cells by injecting medicines intravenously into the afflicted areas. Sometimes, a combination of two or more therapies becomes necessary to cope with the disease. There are other treatment procedures, including thoracentesis and paracentesis, which take out the fluid from the chest and the abdomen.

The important point to note, however, is that individuals often contract the disease due to the willful negligence of an employer, who often knows full well the impact of continuous exposure of asbestos dust and flakes on the worker?s health, yet does not issue the necessary warning before offering employment or take adequate preventive measures; as such, employers are often liable for stringent punishment. So the responsibility of bearing the cost of treatment in addition to the punitive damages and the loss of wages lies squarely with the employer. The best course for a patient should be to consult a lawyer immediately after being diagnosed as suffering from mesothelioma. As a specialist and an experienced lawyer, the attorney has a fairly good idea of the cost of treatment, as he may have already dealt with many similar cases. These costs therefore can be recovered easily from the employer.

Multiple Sclerosis What are the Effects

What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a central nervous system disorder characterized by damage to the messages transmitted to and from the brain. These messages generally control the way the body works. Thus, any damage can cause problems with vision, memory, balance and movement. It may also affect the ability to feel sensation, pain and vibration.

The human body is serviced by an extensive system of nerves that control the way the body functions. These nerves are protected by a fatty substance called myelin which insulates them from damage. If a person suffers from multiple sclerosis, the myelin is damaged thus blocking the impulses from the brain.

Symptoms of multiple sclerosis

The early symptoms include loss of vision, loss of balance, weakness, and numbness. These symptoms are not universal to all sufferers. In fact, some people suffer little more than intense fatigue while others may be so affected they may become paralyzed.

The term ?sclerosis? means scarring and anyone looking at the brain or the tissue of the spinal cord sees what looks like intense scarring.

The damage in multiple sclerosis is thought to be caused by an unusual reaction to infections. The immune system produces white blood cells that destroy dangerous bacteria or viruses. However, in cases of multiple sclerosis, the white cells attack healthy tissue like myelin and nerve cells. This is called an auto immune response.

What are the types of multiple sclerosis?

There are four main kinds of multiple sclerosis, with symptoms varying in severity. These are:

Benign
Relapsing/remitting (RRMS)
Secondary progressive (SPMS)
Primary progressive

People with benign multiple sclerosis may have the occasional attack while feeling perfectly healthy at other times. They suffer only a mild disability or no disability at all though medical examination shows evidence of multiple sclerosis damage to the brain. The lack of disability is because the damage may be in places in the brain that do not cause obvious disability or the damage is minimal.

More than fifty percent of sufferers start with relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis in which they may suffer relapses two or three times a year with partial or complete recovery at other times. However, due to the gradual death of nerve cells and the myelin, the symptoms may get worse and more frequent. This takes them into the stage of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS).

In secondary progressive multiple sclerosis or SPMS, the disability increases as there is a progressive loss of nerve cells. During this stage, the sufferer no longer has relapses and remissions and the disability becomes progressively worse.

There are some people who become more and more disabled without ever having relapses and remissions. This type of multiple sclerosis is called primary progressive multiple sclerosis.

How is it diagnosed?

Our bodies fight infection by producing white blood cells, a natural disease fighter. However, in people with multiple sclerosis, the protective covering of the nerve fibres (myelin) is also attacked by these white blood cells. One of the tests done to diagnose multiple sclerosis is a lumbar puncture. In this test, cerebrospinal fluid is extracted from the spine through a hollow needle and is examined for signs of this disease.

The hidden signs of multiple sclerosis can also be detected using an MRI (magnetic resonance image). This uses a combination of radio waves and magnetic fields that provide a detailed view of the brain and spinal cord. By using this, the lesions in the myelin can be detected.

Treatment and outlook

At this time, multiple sclerosis is incurable, although thre is research taking place globally in an effort to find a treatment that will slow down the progression of this illness. In the meantime, there are a number of options which may make life more bearable. Some doctors prescribe ACTH, a steroid that accelerates the healing actions of the body.

Though there is no scientific evidence that special diets are beneficial, anecdotal evidence suggests that diets such as gluten free diets or those low in animal fats do help.

Many multiple sclerosis sufferers seek out alternative therapies to relieve their symptoms. This may include acupuncture, homeopathy, and yoga.

For each person, the answer may be different and, though multiple sclerosis has no cure, it is important for the sufferer to find a positive way of living with this illness.

One of the Key Secrets to LifeLong Leanness

One of the things that I do on a regular basis to help me continually learn about fitness success and failure is observing people's habits and actions. I feel that these observations are equally as important as reading books, journals, articles, etc. for improving my knowledge of what works and what doesn't in fitness.

Something that happens to me on a regular basis when I meet people is that once they find out that I'm a fitness professional, they start asking me questions about the things that they eat or how they exercise, and what my opinion is on it. I don't mind this, because it gives me some insight on exactly what people do, what they believe, and how things have worked for them.

I will qualify that I only give my advice if it is asked for. I never preach about fitness to someone who didn't ask for my advice. After all, I know I don't want people preaching to me about their expertise if I didn't ask for the advice.

So, one thing I noticed while on vacation last week in the carribean was that out of hundreds and hundreds of people from all different countries that were walking around the sunny resorts in bathing suits, I only saw a grand total of about 4 people that had anything resembling six-pack abs. That's only 4 people out of probably close to 1000 that I saw throughout the 7 days!

This observation has nothing to do with their actions while on vacation, just about their current state of fitness. Now obviously most people, including myself, are not following their normal actions and behaviors on vacation that they would in normal life. That's not the point.

I make observations about the habits and actions of both the fit people and the fat people on a daily basis to help determine successful vs. unsuccessful actions. It could be at grocery stores, at the gym, at restaurants, at the office, at someone's house...all are potential spots to learn why people are either fit or fat.

Start paying attention to the actions of the people around you on a daily basis, and their corresponding body shape, and you'll learn a lot. Here are some examples of things you may notice:

You might notice that the overweight woman at the office who claims she can never lose any weight is actually the first one in the kitchen whenever someone brings in free donuts or cookies. You might also notice that the guy with the beer gut, who says it's impossible for him to get rid of the gut, is skipping breakfast on a regular basis (a killer for your metabolism), and drinking 2 or 3 sodas a day without even realizing it. No wonder he's got a beer gut! On the other hand, you might also notice that the girl with the slim figure, who seemingly eats all kinds of junk food (and everyone gripes that she should be fat with all of that crap she eats), never actually finishes more than half of what she's eating. When you take a closer look, she's actually not eating that many calories day in and day out, and that's why she's lean. It's not always as it appears on the surface.

The point is that there's always an underlying reason why someone is either fat or fit, and it revolves around their lifestyle, their actions, their habits. Look a little deeper and you'll learn a lot about why people fail and why people succeed with weight management and other fitness goals.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosis

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is known to cause the inflammation of joints, and its damage gradually reduces body movement. The symptoms can be observed as stiff joints in the morning hours; as one ages, RA can affect other organs of the body such as the spleen, blood vessels, and lungs. There is no one particular cause for rheumatoid arthritis. It may be caused by an infection in the immune system. It may be a genetic disease running in the family. Or, the cause of rheumatoid arthritis can be non-genetic, affecting the person at some point of life. Studies are ongoing to identify if any bacteria or viruses may cause rheumatoid arthritis. Just as identifying the cause of the disease is difficult, diagnosing RA is also not an easy task. There are many methods and techniques of diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis. Of course initially, the person goes through a complete physical examination offered by the doctor. The diagnosis of the doctor is verified and concluded through the laboratory tests before administering treatment.

A latex test is one of the most recommended diagnoses. The test is used to detect the presence of rheumatoid factor in blood. In most cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the anti-bodies or white blood cells attack the body?s own tissues instead of foreign bodies because of the increased rheumatoid factors. But not all rheumatoid arthritis patients test positive in latex test. Another diagnosis, called Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, involves collecting and checking the blood for the rate of sedimentation. If the rate of sedimentation of red blood cells is high, the patient is said to have an active inflammation in the body, a severe case of rheumatoid arthritis. Similarly, tests are also conducted to test for an increase in C-reactive protein in blood, which may result in an increased inflammation in body. These tests are often conducted again after a certain time period to diagnose for the rate of inflammation as high or low. Bone densitometry is yet another suggested diagnosis, using imaging to measure bone density and osteoporosis, a common characteristic of extreme rheumatoid arthritis. Magnetic resonance imaging and ultra sound?although rarely?are used to diagnose inflammation in joints when rheumatoid arthritis is at an early stage. But an X-ray may only help in identifying the deformity of the bones in the joint at a later stage. Based on the diagnosis, the consulting doctor suggests treatments.

Allergy Asthma

Of all the diseases related to the respiratory system, asthma allergy is the most prevalent. This condition is usually visible in children and young adults, but the process may progress throughout their lives. Asthma allergy is a lung disease characterized by difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing, and the increase in production of mucus during an attack. The symptoms may bring simple discomfort or they may eventually lead to death, depending on the number allergens that affect the patient, causing blockages in the airways.

Cause of Asthma Allergies

The cause of asthma allergy is similar to the causes of an allergic reaction in a person. Allergens include dust, chemicals, scents, odors and changes in temperature. The actual reactions vary from patient to patient. In some cases of asthma allergy, symptoms are triggered by exercise or the emotional state of a person. These symptoms are quite unique.

Smoke is the most recognized cause of allergy asthma, especially for children. Statistics show that a ratio of eight out of 10 children are at risk of developing asthmatic conditions when exposed to smoke. It is believed that as the city becomes more industrialized, people may develop symptoms that are similar to asthma.

Risk Factors

Asthma allergy is not distinct to certain types of people. Anyone of any age, race, weight, height or gender is at risk of acquiring the disease. People who are involved in industries that deal with heavy emissions are at a higher risk of developing asthma.

It is also believed that asthma allergy is a hereditary disorder. A person who has a history of asthma allergy in the family is also at risk.

Treatments

Treatment starts with managing asthma attacks. To do this, a person needs to stay away from allergens that trigger asthma allergy. There are also medicines that can be prescribed by a physician to alleviate some symptoms.

Asthma provides detailed information on Asthma, Allergy Asthma, Bronchial Asthma, Exercise Induced Asthma and more. Asthma is affiliated with Food Allergies.

Hand Pain Can Disappear

Are you in pain every time you touch a keyboard? Does your pain level increase on a daily basis? Do you want to scream in pain while working? Do you think you will not make it until the end of the day? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, read on.

Working on a daily basis can be a real hassle. Setting our alarm clocks and rolling out of bed is stress enough. If we are like most Americans we take our daily suicide trip down the freeway. When we arrive at our work place we are already stressed and ready to pack it in and start for home.

When you mix your stress level and pain level together it does not make for an enjoyable work day.

What can we do about this? We can take small steps. Taking small steps is how we all learned how to walk. In order to curb our hand pain we can start with a small idea that can lead to monumental results.

You can place a pad underneath your keyboard. It cushions your hands and arms and your pain will disappear or greatly diminish.

This is a baby step that work. This pad can be used at work as well as in your home workplace.

When your hands are happy you are happy and your family will be happy. They will not have to listen to you tell them about how much pain you are in on a daily basis.

New Health Care System: Unique Source of Critical Health Data

There has been a dramatic breakthrough involving a new direction in health care far beyond anything we have ever seen to date. In fact its features are so encompassing and so promising that at this time its ultimate degree of success is impossible to comprehend.

This along, with the previous article, discusses the underlying strength of such a system--how could such an outstanding system be possible? How is it logically based? The core of the proposed system is based on a special application of clinical laboratory science, with the use of a very large profile (100 tests). This application would be able to extract an enormous amount of health data from such a profile. Hopefully, the following will explain how and why.

First, whenever we have multiple tests within our current medical system, we evaluate the tests as a whole. Each one has to be taken into account, but also weighed in relation to the rest of the tests.

Let's take a look at a situation that most of us are very familiar with. Among other considerations, common tests by our doctor during an office visit are body temperature and two blood pressure measurements. The number of test level graduations used here for each test would be ten.

As an example let's say your body temperature was very high, at 106. Now that in itself would of course be very significant, but it would obviously not provide the doctor with enough information for an accurate diagnosis. Say we now bring the two blood pressure tests both into the picture. Now we have three test results involved and if the results of any one of the three would vary significantly it could obviously affect the diagnosis. Most of us realize how important each of these test results can be. So, the diagnosis is, in effect, limited to the relationship of the individual test results to each other. It is the relationship of the tests that are analyzed for the diagnostic results. For simplification purpose we will refer to this relationship as the combination of the test results. We can see that each combination of test level results could represent a certain health related condition--this would be especially true with the normal use of more tests.

Furthermore, to illustrate the rapid buildup of test result data, it?s difficult to believe that in this limited three test example that mathematically we actually have 1000 possible combinations involved. These are combinations that could be read by a computer for possible meaningful results. All 1000 combinations would not likely provide meaningful information and of course could be eliminated where it was shown that those particular combinations were of little or no value. However, one could expect a large percentage to be of significance, especially so if the computer was used to also correlate all of the possible results directly to human health conditions.

Now let?s apply this same consideration to the much larger 100 test profile. The 3 test had 10 possible graduations each, whereas the 100 profile will only have 5. If we apply the math to this 100 test profile we actually have ten trillion possible combinations. As with the 3 test example, where all 1000 would not likely be of significance, here again neither would all 10 trillion combinations. However, it is obvious that this provides an enormous amount of very relevant data, data that is directly tied to the inter workings of the human organism. Furthermore, the reliability and value of this data has been firmly established over the years as a vital branch of the current medical system.

Although this means of testing a person provides an enormous base of vital health data, obviously a very special electronic processing system is required.

An exciting new direction in health care far beyond anything we have ever seen to date. In fact its features are so encompassing and so promising that at this time its ultimate degree of success is impossible to comprehend.

Some Exercise Tips For The Working Professional

Sometimes I wonder at how my fitness priorities could change so much since high school. Back then I never would have imagined myself struggling to find the time to stay in shape or, as I often find necessary, get back into shape. I have seen many friends from my days as an athlete who have put on some serious extra weight. Most of them admit that they just haven?t made keeping their physique a priority, and nearly all complain of not having the time, access to a gym, or a consistent workout companion. Here are some simple things you might try if you?ve found yourself in a similar situation, facing a demanding desk job, needing to spend quality time with your wife and kids after work, and shamelessly watching your once rock-hard body settle like a landfill.

Make good use of the small time slots Back when I had hours to spend in the weight room because of a lack of other responsibilities, I used to mock the commercials that insisted that with the BowFlex system, a person could sculpt a body similar to the ones shown using the equipment. I?m still not quite sold on that (the people on the commercials are pretty ripped), but I do think there is a principle there. Many people neglect getting exercise because they think it means dedicating a two-hour time slot they can?t afford. However, if you think about the downtime you experience each day, twenty minutes isn?t a lot. You can still get results even if the twenty minutes you spend exercising isn?t all at the same time. I had a computer science professor in college who would sometimes appear to be out of his office when I went to visit until I heard the heavy breathing under his desk. When I asked what he was doing, he told me that he would do a set of 20 push-ups in between classes or when he needed a quick break from preparing lesson plans or grading work. If you consciously find five of those breaks in one day, you can stay in pretty decent shape.

It may be easier for you to spend ten minutes in the morning when you first get up, then again at night before you go to bed. One suggestion that I have heard many times is to try to build up to a sweat, as this will increase the number of calories you burn.

Be Creative About Exercising Sure it might help to have a sophisticated piece of equipment that cost so much that you feel obligated to use it. However, gravity is available to everyone, and that really is all you need to find the resistance required for exercise. During periods when I didn?t have access to free weights, I found other exercises that would give me definition and tone, from push-ups to wall squats (sit against the wall as if you are in a chair for as long as you can - it really works your legs), from shadow boxing to toe touches, I was able to stay in good enough shape that when I later had access to free weights again, I wasn?t starting from square one. The home I live in now has two floors. At the risk of needing to replace our carpet on the stairs more quickly than we planned, I run the stairs in my home when I have a break. It works just the same as when I ran the bleachers in high school.

Set Goals I like to remind myself of what I want to accomplish by setting some reasonable goals and keeping a chart or list of what I expect of myself. This makes it so that other pursuits don?t crowd out the need for exercise. If you have an office of some other place where you can hang notes at home, put up a reminder to ?Do 50 pushups and situps?. This will give you added strength to keep up with your fitness goals. Another helpful suggestion is to let someone (your spouse is a good resource) know what you are trying to accomplish and ask for help following up on your goal.

These are a few simple tips for staying or getting in shape for those of us who still remember what it was like to be great athletes, but who struggle with making it a priority. Try them today and see if they can make a difference in your life.

The G. I Diet and benefits for Losing Weight

The glycemic index diet or G.I. diet is gaining a reputation as a healthy way to lose weight. Although more of a way of eating rather than a diet, more and more people following the G. I way achieve their weight loss goals. Many health experts agree that the Glycemic Index diet, if followed correctly, can be a great way to weight loss success, especially for those who struggle with conventional low calorie diets or dieters who have trouble controlling their appetite.

The G.I diet is similar to the low carb diet but it is not as strict and targets the types of carbs rather than the quantity of carbs for each meal. There is also a focus on the correct timing of the two basic types of meals ? a carb or protein meal. The science behind the timing and types of meal makes G.I dieting a potent way to help lose fat stores, safely and relatively quickly.

The G.I diet is all about Insulin and controlling blood sugar levels.

Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate our blood sugar; actually it lowers blood sugar levels by stimulating cells to absorb any excess sugar from the blood. The problem with Insulin is it also causes fat cells to take up excess fatty acids from the blood. Often we ingest a meal which includes both sugar and fats so if any meal includes foods which have a high Glycemic Index then the fat from that meal can be easily stored on the hips.

There is an established theory that if one can control insulin levels then one can control how much fat the body will store from each and EVERY meal. Fat can only be stored when Insulin is present, and Insulin is only released when blood sugar levels become elevated.

What raises blood sugar?

Carbohydrate in foods will raise blood sugar if it is absorbed too rapidly. The types of foods which cause rapid absorption of sugar are all those with a high G.I index rating.

The basics of the G.I index

The Glycemic Index ranks carbohydrate foods by assigning them a number ranging from 0 to 100. The number indicates the rate at which the food raises blood glucose levels during its absorption. The higher the value the quicker the sugar is absorbed.

A high Glycemic index food has a value of 70 and above. A G.I value of 56-69 is considered medium and any foods lower than 55 are considered a low Glycemic index food. Foods with a low G.I are best as they digest more naturally and help provide a steady supply of energy over the course of several hours, it also makes us feel fuller for longer.

Is the G.I Diet simple?

The diet sounds simple because foods are generally chosen from the low G.I food list, but it gets complicated when you create a meal made up of many different food items, each with a unique G.I value. The idea is to make sure most items which make up every meal have a low Glycemic index, thus the overall G.I of the meal stays within the low to medium range.

Gaining complete nutrition

There are some foods which have a high G.I rating but are considered a healthy nutritious food. In these cases healthy high G.I foods can be combined with low G.I foods to maintain low-medium G.I value, plus help create a complete nutritional intake. An example is baked potato (high G.I) topped with baked beans (low G.I). There are also low G.I foods which should be limited. Fresh meat and poultry contains no sugar so the G.I. will be very low, however, they do contain lots of fat and protein so the energy content will be high. Remember calories do still count!

One positive point about the G.I meal plan is it?s possible for dieters to enjoy the odd ?treat? item once or twice each week, maybe an occasional dessert after a light dinner. As long as these ?bad? items are NOT eaten alone it should not ruin the diet plan.

Benefits of G.I. way of eating:

1. Enjoy tasty foods but limit storage of fat
2. Enjoy some favourite foods AND still lose fat
3. Increased energy level and wellbeing
4. Control of blood sugar
5. Less hunger feelings
6. Less craving for sugary foods
7. Less bloating feeling after meals
8. Ability to eat more food if desired
9. Less risk from diabetes and other diseases
10. No strict calorie reductions

High Blood Pressure and the Effect of Alcohol

Alcohol has a meaningful outcome on high blood pressure, so it is important people pay more attention on the relation of alcohol and blood pressure and its outcome on the health.

People who drink large amounts of alcohol often show signs of having higher blood pressure than people that drink less. This becomes important, especially in incidents where people are regular drinkers. If the alcohol consumption is kept fairly limited, that is, occasional drinking then the blood pressure level is not so incline to lean towards dangerously high readings.

For instance, a person may have an alcoholic drink, such as 12 ounces of beer or 5 ounces of wine, each are considered a single drink per day. Some males may take 1 or 2 drinks and be within safe levels. Now a female may take only 1 drink in comparison as females do not have the same level of tolerance towards alcohol as males. When the consumption of alcohol is increased over this safe level by both males and females, there is an affect on the flexibility of the blood vessels and this can increase their blood pressure measurements towards critical levels.

Due to drinking habits, alcohol and blood pressure changes are reasons for concern by physicians who deal with these types of hypertension patients, another problem they need to take into account are people drinking alcohol in large amounts may develop weight increase problems due to the elevation in calories.

If the blood pressure is elevated because of weight problems, then further medication may have to be prescribed to control the hypertension. This can be difficult to administer because of the alcohol in the person's body can have an dangerous effect from the medication being prescribed for them.

Thinking about the strong relationship between alcohol and raised blood pressure, it's obvious that drinking less alcohol is a must. So people with cardiac illnesses such as myocarditis, severe high blood pressure or congestive heart failure should avoid alcohol based beverages at all cost. If they can't stay away from alcohol completely, they should keep their drinking down to a bare minimum.

From the intake of alcohol calcium and magnesium in the body can become decreased. By supplementing them may lead to their own indirect problems such as increase in blood pressure. So any patient with an alcohol dependence problem should have all their medicines thoroughly and carefully prescribed and monitored by their physician.

People with a drinking problem are prone to increased blood pressure and on top of that one of the problems of trying to correct the blood pressure with medication is the effect alcohol with the prescription has on the patient. It can increase its potency thus causing further medical problems.

A patient who has an alcohol problem and raised blood pressure should be well-advised and given support to reduce their drinking as much as possible. Limits and guidelines should be administered for drinking by the physician and these should be stuck to as much as possible by the patient.

Causes of diabetes

Certain factors that contribute to the development of diabetes are

Heredity

Heredity is a major factor. That diabetes can be inherited has been known for centuries. However, the pattern of inheritance is not fully understood. Statistic indicates that those with a family history of the disease have a higher risk of developing diabetes than those without such a background. The risk factor is 25 to 33 percent more.

One reason why diabetes, especially type-2 diabetes runs in the family is because of the diabetes gene. But even it is caused by genetic factors beyond your control; there is no reason to suffer from it. Diabetes cannot be cured in full sense of the term, but it can be effectively controlled so that you would not know the difference.

Diet

Diabetes has been described by most medical scientists as a prosperity? disease, primarily caused by systematic overeating. Not only is eating too much sugar and refined carbohydrates harmful, but proteins and fats, which are transformed into sugar, may also result in diabetes if taken in excess.

It is interesting to note that diabetes is almost unknown in countries where people are poor and cannot afford to overeat.

The incidence of diabetes is directly linked with the consumption of processed foods rich in refined carbohydrates, like biscuits, bread, cakes chocolates, pudding and ice creams.

Obesity

Obesity is one of the main causes of diabetes. Studies show that 60 to 85 % of diabetics tend to be overweight. In the United States of America, about 80 percent of type ?2 non-insulin dependent diabetics are reported to be overweight.

Excess fat prevents insulin from working properly. The more fatty tissue in the body, the more resistant the muscle and tissue cells become to body insulin. Insulin allows the sugar in the blood to enter the cells by acting on the receptor sites on the surface of the cells.

Older people often tend to gain weight, and the same time, many of them develop and mild form of diabetes because who are over weight can often improve their blood sugar simply by losing weight.

Stress and Tension

There is a known connection between stress and diabetes, those who are under stress and/or lead an irregular lifestyle, need to take adequate precautions and make necessary lifestyle adjustments.

Grief, worry and anxiety resulting from examinations, death of a close relative, loss of a joy, business failure and strained marital relationship, all a deep influence on the metabolism and may cause sugar to appear in the urine.

Smoking

Smoking is another important risk factor. Among men who smoke, the risk of developing diabetes is doubled. In women who smoke 25 or more cigarettes a day, the risk of developing diabetes is increased by 40 percent.

Lifestyle Risk

People who are less active have greater risk of developing diabetes. Modern conveniences have made work easier. Physical activity and exercise helps control weight, uses up a lot of glucose (sugar) present in the blood as energy and makes cells more sensitive to insulin. Consequently, the workload on the pancreas is reduced.

How to Keep in Shape with Exercising Gadgets

We?ve all seen those TV commercials featuring all sorts of exercise gadgets that will get you that buff body or that rib-like belly with minimum effort. There are even wrap-around belts that zap your midsection with electronic pulses, allowing you to slim down without even making an effort to move your own muscles. Wow! If only they worked!

But, of course, any of us who have bought one of these effort-free exercise gadgets knows that their ultimate use is as a trash can stuffer. They work about as well as miracle weight loss diets. They are expensive and worthless gadgets, not solutions to getting yourself in shape. The only way to get in shape is the old fashioned way sweaty exercise on a scheduled basis.

It?s not a bad way to go, either. I have done it for years, and this issue leads with an exercise article by Richard Blunt that I adhere to, with a few modifications. For example, I like to chop wood so I often substitute chopping wood for resistance training.

But I have found a good use for gadgets to help me stay in shape. In fact, as I write this I?m on my eighteenth minute on my treadmill, which is a super-handy gadget. And I?m writing this commentary by dictating it into another gadget a pocket-sized cassette player/recorder. It is even more useful than my treadmill because it turns the treadmill into a work station, making it something that doesn?t just exercise my body but allows me to continue working at what I like best writing this magazine.

This is a critical issue for me being able to work while I exercise. I am one of those people who can?t just exercise. I have to get stuff done, whether that stuff is working at my business or just catching the news or a basketball game on TV.

So I?ve positioned my treadmill in front of the TV, and in a little plastic basket I?ve taped to the side of the treadmill I keep the TV remote so I can switch between channels or raise the volume when I put the treadmill into a jog. Also in the basket is my hands-free telephone with headset, just in case I get an important business call while I jog. And I keep my high fidelity earphones in there too, in case I want to pursue one of my favorite hobbies listening to books on tape.

I?ve essentially turned my treadmill into a work, entertainment, and learning center. It?s become one of the most productive areas of my house.

I am not the only busy person I know who has embraced the necessity of exercising to maintain good health but who can?t quite justify the effort to just exercise. Ron Graham, BHM?s operations manager, also has his exercise machine a Gazelle Freestyle Glider in front of his TV, and he typically exercises on it to the tunes of his favorite group, the Bee Gees.

To me it just makes sense to make exercise fun and mentally productive. Otherwise, why would anyone continue doing it? It?s not human nature to continue doing things that make us miserable.

I have other exercise gadgets too, like a set of dumbbells, a bench, and a heavy bag, but all are strategically located so that I can do more than just work out.

These little electronic gadgets not the electronic zappers and miracle diets are the real miracle exercising tools of our day. They help the actual workout fade into the background, and for me they often even extend the workout. For example, I intended to use the treadmill this time for 20 minutes, but I have been so mentally involved with formulating these words that as I look down at the treadmill timer, it is on its 26th minute.

Here?s the bottom line: The greatest impediment to people exercising to maintain their health is that it takes too much time and trouble. So fool yourself by making it either fun or productive. My wife loves her jazzercise. It?s good exercise and a social event at the same time. My daughter loves her dance classes. There?s lots of stuff to do out there besides just exercising. For the sake of your health, find your own fun and keep fit.

One Simple Movement Can Double the Effectiveness of Pulldowns

The Pulldown is an excellent exercise for working the Latissimus Dorsi muscles of the back (also known as the lats). It is a little known fact but there is a way you can dramatically improve the effectiveness of this exercise by performing one simple movement before each rep.

Many people have a hard time feeling their lats working when they do pulldowns. The biceps may have a tendency to take over the movement. Some people just don?t feel anything in their back at all.

This little movement trick can change all of that.

The movement is simply a shoulder drop and even though it may seem like a SMALL thing, it can have a HUGE impact on your back workout.

To demonstrate this movement, start by sitting in a pulldown machine with a moderate weight on the stack. Take a close grip on the bar with your palms facing you (known as a reverse grip). Do a few reps using your normal technique so you have a gauge to measure against.

Now we will add the shoulder drop. Let your arms go straight and let your shoulder girdle rise up as though shrugging. Your shoulders should be up by your ears. Now drop your shoulder girdle down in the opposite movement to the shrug, pulling the weight down as you do so. The range of motion is small, being only a matter of a few inches. Repeat this drop and raise several times to get the feel for the movement. You should feel your entire shoulder girdle moving up and down.

We will now do a rep with the shoulder drop movement. Start in the stretched position with your shoulders up by your ears. Drop your shoulders down, lean slightly back then do a pulldown. Be sure to keep your lower back arched and your chest puffed out to meet the bar on the way down. You should feel your lats working harder than usual.

Squeeze hard as though trying to touch your shoulder blades together as you come to the bottom then let the weight back up slowly. You can repeat the shoulder drop movement at the start of every rep or you can simply keep your shoulders down and locked in that position throughout the set.

Dropping your shoulders down like this serves to lock the lats into the movement and helps to minimize the biceps involvement in the pulldown. You should find that you get a much more effective lat workout using this technique.

Are Fat Burner Products Safe?

A fat burner supplement operates by breaking down body fat through a principle of thermo genesis. The ability to stimulate the thyroid into action and raise body temperature is achieved by taking a fat burner product.

A natural fat burner increases the metabolism rate while fat cells are mobilised and inhibited from enlarging. Any stored body fats are burned and utilised as energy by the fat burner. Physically active individuals find fat burner products very effective in reaching and maintaining a goal weight.

There is ongoing debate concerning whether using a fat burner is safe or not. Much fat burner research is being done with regard to health and safety. There are now several natural fat burner products available.

Emerging reports on fat burner products indicate that caution should be used when choosing a fat burner. Avoid fat burners, which contain ephedrine as it can become addictive. Also known as ma huang, the ephedrine included in a fat burner product is a Chinese herb renowned for increasing energy levels.

Ephedrine is also used to treat asthma, and helps with weight loss when included in a fat burner supplement. In order to enhance the effectiveness of ephedrine it is often combined in a fat burner with caffeine, aspirin or other ingredients.

Unfortunately, the side effects of ephedrine often outweigh its actual usefulness. Side effects of ephedrine range from mildly unpleasant headaches through to more serious heart palpitations, seizures and even death. A report issued by the FDA estimates that at least 58 ephedrine-associated deaths have occurred since 1993. Fortunately, many of the fat burner products no longer include ephedrine in their ingredients. Any fat burner should be used responsibly and a natural fat burner must be used with your doctor's knowledge if you have any medical problems.

Due to the FDA approved Dietary Supplement Act of 1994, dietary supplements and fat burner products have been allowed to be marketed without mandatory safety or effectiveness testing. When considering the safety issue concerning a fat burner caution should be the watchword.

Choose a natural fat burner product, which has been tested and proven to be a safe and natural fat burner. Bear in mind that not all individuals using a fat burner will experience the same weight loss speed from a fat burner. Fat burning could be quicker for some individuals taking a fat burner than for others.

For maximum fat burner safety, always use a natural fat burner as directed and do not take too much in the hope of a quicker weight loss. Because many fat burners contain caffeine or other stimulants this could have adverse effects when you take too many. While initially you might feel energetic when using a fat burner, taking too much is unhealthy and will leave you feeling physically drained at the very least. When taken for short time periods many natural fat burners are safe.

Millions of people worldwide have experienced positive fat burner results. A fat burner will provide the most benefits when taken as part of a healthy lifestyle. Include balanced eating habits and exercise when taking a fat burner for optimum weight management. Essentially a fat burner is a supplement and should be used as one, to supplement a healthy lifestyle and enhance it through weight control.

Major Causes of Gout and How to Avoid Them

The major cause of gout is the accumulation of uric acid in the joints. The uric acid is a chemical that is a natural part of the normal breakdown and build up of food in body tissues. The level of uric acid may be found and measured in the blood.

The condition where there is a rise in blood?s uric acid level is called hyperuricaemia. With the presence of such condition it is no wonder that uric acid crystals are formed in the joints. These crystals are responsible for the inflammation called gouty arthritis or acute gout.

Gout usually attacks people whose uric acid level has always been above normal. There are various reasons why uric acids level increases in the body:

?The higher than normal uric acid levels may be inherited in some families

?Obesity was also found to cause gout attacks

?High alcohol and caffeine intake

?High intake of food containing purines

?Some drugs used to treat high blood pressure and long standing kidney diseases

The first step in treating gout is to correct the factors that increase the levels of uric acid in the body. Patients should also work to refrain from eating purine rich foods since these substances are found to contain a lot of uric acid. Here are foods high in purines and to be avoided:

?Organ meat products such as liver, kidneys, tripe, sweetbreads and tongue,

?Excessive amounts of red meat, shellfish, fish roe and scallops,

?Peas, lentils and beans,

?Alcohol and caffeine intakes should be reduced. A glass of beer a day or less is recommended

?Crash diets should also be avoided

?Some drugs for high blood pressure may need to be altered or adjusted

An important aspect of treating gout is lowering the uric acid levels. There are some drugs that can bring down the uric acid level in the body. However, it should be noted that these drugs only temporarily treat symptoms of gout and should not be taken on a long-term basis. The dosage is based on the level of uric acid found in the body. Regular check ups are required in order to arrive at the maintenance dosage that will prevent recurrent gout attacks.

As long as the level of uric acid continues to be lower than the normal any symptoms of gout are a remote possibility. Provided of course that medication is continued. Some drugs work by increasing elimination of uric acid through the kidney while others simply hinder the formation of uric acid in the first place.

Likewise, it is important for patients using medications to realize that during the first few months of treatment, it is still possible to have gout attacks, however severe gouty attacks are lessened.

Some of the complications of long time and acute cases of gout are deposits of uric acid salts that may appear around the affected joint and even in tissues in the earlobes. These uric acid salts are chalk colored nodules, and are also called tophi. The presence of uric acid salts is an indication further treatment is needed.
