Chew Your Food

I am going to share with you possibly the most important piece of advice you will ever receive about nutrition. This piece of advice is not about supplementation. It is not about what you should be eating. However this piece of advice affects every other dietary choice that you make.

Are you ready?

Chew your food!

Chewing is the first step of the digestive process. The fancy word for it is mastication. What it means is that what you put in your mouth is ground up into smaller pieces and mixed with some digestive enzymes to begin the digestive process.

What is the digestive process? To understand the process, it?s best to first understand the purpose. The purpose of digestion is to extract beneficial materials from what you eat and expel the rest. This process involves breaking down your food into smaller and smaller pieces. When some of those pieces are small enough they are absorbed into your bloodstream. Other components, like insoluble fiber, continue on through your intestines and help to expel other waste products and to clean the surfaces of your intestines.

So what does this have to do with chewing? If you do not properly to your food, what you have eaten will go through your digestive system as large pieces of food. You do not have teeth anywhere else in your body. After you swallow your food, there are no other opportunities to break up large pieces of food. The acid from your stomach and the enzymes from your small intestine will only be able to act on the exposed surfaces. Chewing properly is the only way to grind up your food so that it is small enough to allow the rest of your digestive system to extract as many of the available nutrients as possible.

So the next time you eat, put a little thought into the first step of digestion. Chew your food.

How to Start Moving if You are a Sedentary Adult

If you have finally decided that exercise needs to become a part of your life, I can help.

Walking is natural.

Since you have never done any deliberate exercise before, I would recommend just going for a 5 minute walk. You don?t even have to go outside to do this. Set the kitchen timer for 5 minutes and start moving around inside your house. When the timer rings you are finished. Try to do this 3-5 times a week. If you would do this 3 times a week you would have done 15 minutes of deliberate exercise and if you did it 5 times a week that would be an accumulation of 25 minutes. You can really feel good about yourself, now. Keep the 5 minutes of walking up for a week or two and then increase it to 6 or 7 minutes. Look what that does to your weekly total!! Increasing a minute or two each workout is an easy and doable way to gradually increase your stamina and endurance.

Stamina;

that?s a new word, what does that mean? Staying power, energy, resilience are all definitions of stamina.

Endurance;

we are all familiar with this word, but how does it relate to exercise. Endurance and Stamina are interchangeable. As we gain more endurance we are able to exercise longer. As our endurance increases we get stronger and have more resolve to stay the course.

When you have been doing the walking program consistently and you feel you are ready to add other elements to your fitness program then you can start:

Strength training;

Do strength (resistance) exercises for all your major muscle groups at least twice a week, but not for the same muscle group 2 days in a row. You should gradually increase the amount of weight you use. This the most important part to strength training. The only way you get stronger is to overload the muscles. Start with a low amount of weight (or no weight) and gradually increase it as you get stronger. If you can?t lift a weight more than 8 times it is too heavy; if you can lift it more than 15 times, it?s too light.

Are you well balanced?

Adding some balance exercises can help you stay independent by helping you avoid the disability ? often permanent ? that may result from falling. More often than not strength and balance exercises overlap. One good example would be heel lifts. This exercise strengthens ankle and calf muscles at the same time promoting balance. Standing straight, holding a table or chair for balance, slowly stand on tiptoe as high as possible. Hold this position for a count of four and then slowly lower heels to starting position. As you progress, hold onto the table or chair with one hand, then one finger, then no hands. If you are steady on your feet, progress to no hands with eyes closed. Not only are you strengthening your leg muscles you are challenging your balance.

Don?t forget to stretch.

Stretching keeps you limber. Stretching alone will not improve your endurance or strength, but you should always stretch the muscles that you worked during your strength and endurance phase. Even if you are just walking, remember to stretch your calf muscles and your quadriceps (front of the thigh). If stretching exercises are the only thing you can do right now, that is better than nothing. Always start out with warm muscles. Walk a little bit to get the blood flowing to the muscles thus warming them up. Hold each stretch for 10 ? 30 seconds and don?t bounce. Move slowly into position and then just hold the stretch. Stretching might cause mild discomfort, but should never cause pain.

Exercise is habit forming.

Exercise is a physical activity that leads to fitness. Exercise is said to be the most highly prescribed ?drug? there is. In all the articles and books about exercise, the same conclusion is reached; exercise is the closest thing to the ?Fountain of Youth? that we have. It?s really a shame that only about 15-18% of the population engage in regular physical exercise weekly. Exercise and choosing the right foods are the two critical components to weight control.

Retard the Aging Process.

Senator John Glenn said ?doing exercise that is appropriate for my age and physical condition has guaranteed me an active lifestyle. By exercising and eating properly I can stay healthy as I age.?

Combine Exercise with Nutrition!

As is always noted when we talk about exercise?.. the nutrition angle emerges. Don?t forget to look at your diet and see how it can be improved. If you concentrate on eating as much ?green? food as possible, you will not only improve your digestion but you will control your weight. Avoid the browns and white?s when you are looking at food! One of the most important things to remember if you are concerned about your weight would be to not over-eat.

Think about this: Honor your hunger but respect your fullness!

Verbena Pure Essential Oil

While the lemon verbena is native to South America, the Spaniards introduced this shrub to Europe in the eighteenth century. The Spaniards were growing it for the perfume oil scent. Today, this aromatic plant is cultivated for its leaves and ornamental appeal. Due to the inefficient process of extracting the oil from its leaves, the cost of verbena oil is relatively expen ve. Because of this expense, verbena pure essential oil is rarely used in bath products, such as bath salts and bath soaps. It is mainly used in top of the line, high quality, and expensive perfumes.

The therapeutic properties of verbena pure essential oil help to ease exhaustion, relieve anxiety, and boost concentration. The main constituents in verbena essential oil are limonene, geraniole, cineole, and citral, which is up to 26% of the oil itself. These constituents give lemon verbena a very strong antibacterial, antiseptic, and antispasmodic effects.

Here is an extra tip. If you are looking to purchase pure verbena essential oil, be careful to ensure it is pure. Due to the expensive nature of this oil, it is often found stretched, or diluted, with the less expensive lemongrass oil, which of course will greatly diminish the therapeutic properties of the oil. You can buy the stretched verbena oil, just do not pay for the price of pure verbena oil.

One of the major conditions verbena pure essential oil can help with is insomnia. Verbena helps to promote relaxation. It is this effect, which is useful for easing stress related sleep disorders. All you need to do is add 3 drops each of verbena and lavender oil to your bedside diffuser. Then it's lights out!

Like many of the citrus oils out there, verbena is a great room freshener. Mix 10 drops of verbena oil with 2 ounces of water, preferably distilled if you have some, and store in a spray bottle. Then just spray around the house, and even on sheets and pillows to help remove the stale odors.

If you are pregnant, this oil should be used with caution. Midwives to start, or trigger, contractions, once relied upon verbena essential oil. This oil is still associated with uterine muscle stimulation. Some also believe this oil will increase a woman's stamina, which is well needed, during delivery. Just be sure to take precautions and do your research before using this oil if you are pregnant.

Also, verbena essential oil may irritate the skin. Even when the oil is diluted with a carrier oil, such as safflower oil, there may still be some irritations due to the sensitivity of your skin. Before applying a mixture of verbena and a carrier oil, apply it to small spot on your skin to see of irritations will occur. If not, massage away, but, as always, use this oil with caution.

Due to the expensive nature of verbena pure essential oil, you may never have the chance to experience the true therapeutic properties but, you can still enjoy the aroma of this oil with some of the expensive perfumes. Just ask if verbena oil is one of the oils in the perfume. You can also enjoy the aroma by using one of the stretched blends, which is still somewhat beneficial.

Organic Good ? Eat Organic Food and Stay Healthy

Organic food is often perceived as the food grown in farms without any involvement of artificial methods such as applying pesticides, herbicides, and genetic modification. But in developed countries like US, Japan, and other countries the term ?organic? is precisely defined by the government and there are certain rules prescribed regarding the quantity of production. No individual can use this term unless it satisfies the defined criteria.

There are two broad categories of organic food.

1. Fresh food
2. Processed food.

Fresh organic foods are produced without any involvement of artificial chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics etc. and are usually the products of farming. They are highly perishable in nature and are not available in all the seasons.

Processed organic foods contain more of organic ingredients but are subjected to manufacturing processes unlike the fresh organic food. They are not prepared with artificial flavors and artificial methods such as chemical ripening and food irradiation.

Today, organic processed food occupies a predominant position compared to fresh food. In the earlier days when a consumer wished to buy consumable goods he personally visited the farmer to fetch the food he needed. But today, the direct link between the farmer and the buyer does not exist. The consumers will first obviously visit the market place to buy the kind of food they want. But they will not be able to correctly identify the quality product, as they do not personally observe the farming practices. In order to provide a quality assurance to these goods they are strictly certified and labeled by the law. Therefore it builds a sense of goodwill in the minds of consumers.

I Want to Improve My Health Where Do I Begin?

Looking on the internet, to find the perfect company or the perfect product, to help one achieve one's goals can be a nightmare. There are so many 'wonder' drinks, pills and lotions out there, that many people take big sighs, shake their heads and stop looking. They stay overweight, underweight, weak and feeling poor because the choices are so many and they don?t know where to begin looking.

The same can be said when you peruse the local newspapers, it all looks and sounds great but who can I trust, who really cares about whether or not I lose weight and have my health improved.

Some wellness opportunities you may find have that smell of ?give us your money, here?s the product and off you go.? Some programmes look like they would work, but for how long?

For arguments sake, to find a weight loss programme, I believe you should look to the industry leaders. You need to find out who has stood the test of time, that being years, not months.

I offer you some key things to look for, that will help you find products or a programme that will help you achieve your dreams and goals, from a health perspective, which will in the long run, help and improve every area of your life.

Find someone who will really care for you?

The first thing I offer for your consideration is that you find someone who works a home based business in the health and nutrition industry and you will find someone who has more than a vested interest in your health results. They generally should be more considerate of your goals and ambitions because their livelihood depends on them helping you achieve your goals, so that they may continue to have your custom.

By finding someone who works from home and is succeeding, you have probably found someone who has been through the same process that you are going through right now. They know what it is like to not know where to go, who to turn to with your problem/s. Today you can find many websites where you can actually see the products and read successful testimonies of weight loss; but is that the end of it?

I offer you also the fact that with weight loss comes the concern for your long term health, how will the products affect me in the long term. Companies, like Herbalife who have been around for 25 years, have stood this test of time and peoples lives are better today for the continued intake of their scientifically proven natural products.

Look for a company that supports those in home based businesses 100%, so that you will get the right advice, at the right time, for all of your concerns. Continued good health isn?t an accident, it takes planning and developing of right habits and doing those things in a day to day lifestyle.

Look for a company who will offer to help you, who makes use of distributors or personal coaches to help and encourage you through to your health goals. That is caring, that is good business sense, that is a win-win situation.

I also offer to you that although there are some fabulous companies and products around to help you improve your health, remember that the one main ingredient to your success is YOU. You must be determined, for whatever your reason is, to improve your health and this will take self control. Self control is something that develops with time, but it is possible to achieve. Your success will then come, the more encouragement you get, to ensure your self control becomes your success.

This is why involving someone from a Home Based Business, to help you, is better than going to the shop or supermarket and buying your weight loss or health products from a shelf. Distributors are partnering a company who does the scientific research to produce great products and the distributor then encourages you to achieve your results. This is caring, this is another win-win situation. We all need encouraging. We all need someone to speak into our lives, that?s the way God made us. We all need each other in one way or another.

You must be determined to improve your health, know what it is you want to achieve, then begin looking on the internet or in the local paper for someone who you think will care for and help you, achieve your goals.

Call them, speak to them, ask them questions before they begin to speak their well rehearsed pitch. Get to know the person on the other end of the line and if you feel they can encourage you then go for it with all your heart and improve your health and indeed you life for the better forever.

Heartburn Free Foods for the Holidays: Enjoy Great Food Without the Heartburn This Holiday Season

Ahhh, the holidays... a time of friends, family and for all too many people...

Heartburn!

If you?re one of the 60 million Americans who suffer from acid reflux disease you know how one meal of indulgence can lead to a day or night of misery.

The problem is that during the holidays we allow more things into our diets than we do the rest of the year. We eat more sweet and rich foods, drink more alcohol and coffee, and quite often can pay the price with increased heartburn.

But be of good cheer, dear holiday party-goer, you can still eat well, have a great time, and avoid your heartburn problems!

The secret lies in knowing what foods are bad so you can limit them or substitute something in their places.

The bad heartburn foods come in two varieties...

1. Those that cause an increase in stomach acid, some of which can spill over into your esophagus causing heartburn.

2. Those that relax the esophageal sphincter. The esophageal sphincter is a little muscle at the base of the esophagus that acts as a lid that prevents stomach acid from entering the esophagus.

Here are some of the heartburn causing foods you should look out for this holiday season.

Peppermint

What candy is more associated with the holidays than the red and white striped candy cane? Yet, peppermint is one of those foods that relaxes the esophageal sphincter and allows acid up into your esophagus.

Instead, try a stick of red licorice. You can buy these sticks in bulk, or individually wrapped.

Chocolate

Yes, I?m afraid it?s true; chocolate is another relaxing food that can open the way for stomach acid to reach your esophagus. Instead of chocolate, though, try substituting...

Just kidding. True chocoholics know that there?s no substitute for chocolate, but there are people who are thinking of creative ways to make chocolate heartburn free.

See the resource box at the end of this article for a collection of heartburn-free recipes, including one for fudge!

Alcohol and Coffee/Tea

Between the office holiday party, Christmas with the family, and New Year?s Eve, alcohol consumption for many people sky rockets during this time of year. And, even non-drinkers can over indulge with higher than normal levels of coffee or tea (regular and decaf).

All of the above beverages can increase the acid production in your stomach and give you heartburn. Instead try substituting hot cider (in moderation) for the coffee or tea, and non-alcoholic beer or wine for your other favorite alcoholic beverages.

Hors d' Oeuvres

Spicy and fatty foods are notorious for generating stomach acid production, and no place are these foods more conveniently and neatly presented than on the hors d? Oeuvres trays and tables at holiday parties.

Foods to look out for include cheese, salami, beef sticks, and, of course, spicy buffalo wings. Instead, stick with pretzels, apples, or carrots and broccoli dipped in low fat ranch dressing.

Brunch Food

Lastly, another meal that friends and family share together during the holidays--and one that?s loaded with heartburn traps and snares--is brunch.

From the coffee, to the eggs prepared in butter and garnished with bacon or sausage, to the donuts and fruit juices, brunch offers heartburn foods at every turn. Even here, just a few modifications can result in a very satisfying meal followed by a pleasant, heartburn free day.

Here are a few tips for making your brunch selections...

Egg white omelets are better than those made with whole eggs, and if you like to have some sort of bread with breakfast, try a whole grain bagel with low fat cream cheese.

Apples and bananas are the best choices for fruit and, if you want a fruit juice, apple is probably your best bet there, too.

As you can see, there are plenty of opportunities for acid reflux and heartburn sufferers to enjoy delicious heartburn-free food this holiday season.

Simply, approach each get-together or party with a strategy about what and how much you'll eat. Then, choose to avoid the bad heartburn foods and, most importantly, have a great time this holiday season!

Happy Holidays!

To be Successful You Have to be Healthy Part 1

If you were to stop a noontime crowd on the street and ask them to name their most valuable asset, most wouldn't hesitate to identify their homes as the greatest asset they own. Others may nominate a well-funded 401(k) or a shiny sports car as their most valuable asset.

If so, they would be overlooking an asset that came into their possession the day they were born. It's an asset that many of us under appreciate in our callow youth but can see how it pays great dividends as we grow older. The asset I'm talking about is our health. Many people, however, must not think very highly of this strategic asset in their personal portfolio. Why else would they treat their health so shabbily by making poor lifestyle choices such as overeating and under exercising? We've all heard about how unhealthy we are as a culture-with obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease at all time highs. Newsmagazines and 20/20-type shows report that we've become a fat, sick, and tired people. Is that any way to go through life?

I don't believe so. Ten years ago, while I was a college student, I learned that if you don't have your health, you ain't got nothing. My body was ravaged by several diseases leaving me a bed-ridden 104-pound stick figure who nearly died. Slowly, but surely, I made a comeback by following seven keys that unlocked my health potential (Add Blind Link) including, eating to live, taking effective whole food nutritional supplements, practicing advanced hygiene, making exercise a priority, reducing toxins in my environment, avoiding deadly emotions and living a life of purpose. Since then, I've been inspired to share my message with others through the health and wellness company I founded, Garden of Life which has been named the 14th fasting growing private company in Americal by Inc Magazine, the public speaking I do, the release of several books, including my latest:

Tips to Buy a Good Treadmill

Buying treadmills can a be a daunting task and if you are not sure what you are looking for then you could end up with something that is totally wrong for you.

Before rushing out and buying a treadmill there are certain things that you should know. For starters you should know how often you plan on using this machine. Also, you should always take your weight and height into consideration when looking for a treadmill. There are some treadmills that are bigger and stronger than others and they are designed for heavy-duty use and these are the ones that you should look into buying.

Tips To Get You Started

Most people order their treadmills from a magazine or catalog. While these treadmills may appear good and are usually priced high to give you the idea that they are great, buying a treadmill before trying it out is not always the best thing to do. It is recommended that you visit a sport or department store that has treadmills on display where you can try them out.

It is always a good idea to buy a treadmill from a specialty fitness store. The people who work at these stores will be well educated on the equipment and they can help you greatly in finding the machine that is best for you. Due to the fact that treadmills are quite expensive, it is not something that you want to rush into buying. You need to take your time and find the perfect machine. Buying a treadmill without getting some advise first is not the recommended route to take.

You should be aware of the different types and kinds of treadmills that are available today. Some are more powerful then others and therefore will work in a different way. It is always good to buy a treadmill that has a good motor. It has been found that unless a treadmill has a good motor, which has at least 1.5 continuous-duty horsepower, it will wear out easily. You should be careful of this when buying a treadmill. This is why it is always a good idea to try out the treadmill before buying it.

You should look for treadmills that have adjustable speeds as well as a ramp that can be adjusted up and down. These types of treadmills are usually better and you will get a better work out from these machines, which is what you are looking for. The key is consult a trained professional who is well educated in the way of treadmills who can help you find what you need.

Fungus Toenail Treatments

This article discusses the variety of fungus toenail treatments available to consumers. It divides the various options into four categories: prescription drugs, over the counter (OTC) conventional treatments, natural healing remedies, and traditional home remedies.

None of the remedies discussed here have proven to be 100 percent effective treatment for toenail fungus. For the prescription drugs and some natural healing remedies, the results of clinical trials and/or other scientific studies are available. For most of the traditional home remedies, anecdotal evidence is all we have - that is, the reports by people who have used them that they do work. OTC conventional products are basically not recommended by anyone for the treatment of fungal nail infections.

Oral prescription medications include Lamisil (terbinafine), Sporanox (itraconazole), and Diflucan (fluconazole). Lamisil appears to be the most effective treatment for toenail fungus in this group. While these treatment regimens have the advantage of being relatively easy, they do have rare severe side effects, and they are quite expensive if you have to pay for them out of pocket. People taking these fungus toenail treatments should be monitored for toxicity due to the drugs. There is one topical prescription drug available: Penlac (ciclopirox) nail lacquer is painted directly onto the affected nails, but can only be used when the infection is not advanced.

OTC antifungal ointments, creams and lotions may work quite well for fungal skin infections, but they are not recommended for nails simply because they are not an effective treatment for toenail fungus. They are applied to the nail topically, and they don't penetrate the thick nail to kill the fungus, which is protected in the nail bed below the nail. If you want to try one of these medications, it might be a good idea to combine it with one of the other types of remedy to increase the probability of success.

There are many natural healing remedies available today to consumers; some of them incorporate an oral product. Some of these products may be effective treatment for toenail fungus. Perhaps the most promising ingredient in natural remedies is the essential oil, Tea tree oil, which is produced in Australia. Studies of this extract are encouraging, and a number of natural remedies contain it, blended with other herbal ingredients. Tea tree oil is even available in pure form, however there is some risk of skin sensitivity so this may not be best way to use it. Other natural remedies may be worthwhile fungus toenail treatments, but scientific evidence for or against them is generally lacking, simply because the research has not been done.

Finally, there are a lot of traditional, or simply inventive, home fungus toenail treatments. They include soaking the feet in various solutions, or applying substances that are thought to be antifungal. The substances employed include chlorine bleach, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, dark beer combined with a lactobacillus, Vicks VapoRub, Listerine mouthwash, DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), and others. Some people swear by a drink of apple cider vinegar, twice daily, to cure and prevent fungal toenail infections. Again, the primary focus for an effective treatment for toenail fungus rests with getting the treatment beyond the nail to the fungus.

Acne and Green Tea

Green tea is used by the Chinese as a traditional medicine to treat many ailments including acne and to improve general well-being. But does it provide an effective herbal alternative to modern medication?

The answer seems to be ?Yes?. There are only two herbal treatments that are known to be effective in treating acne and green tea is one of them.

In a recent study by Jennifer Gan-Wong, M.D. a green tea cream was trailed against a 4% benzoyl peroxide solution on people suffering with moderate to severe acne. The results from this research study showed that green tea was just as good in treating acne as the benzoyl peroxide.

But benzoyl peroxide dries out skin causing itching or allergic reactions. Unlike green tea that has the added advantages of natural anti-bacterial properties and antioxidants, particularly epigallocatechin gallate which is 200 times more powerful than vitamin E at fighting free radicals.

Green tea also helps to reduce inflammation, hormonal activity and aids in detoxification - which is all good news for acne sufferers.

Green tea extract is an extremely versatile herbal supplement - it can be administered topically, often being used in creams, taken as a in the form of a pill or incorporated into your diet and drunk as a tea.

This last method is very popular (Green Tea with Honeysuckle is often known as ?Pimple Tea? in many Chinatowns) when drunk after a meal it aids digestion and helps to detoxify your system, getting rid of the toxins that can cause acne. Tip: don?t drink it with sugar, this will neutralize the worthwhile effects of the tea.

It seems that taking green tea for acne is a win-win situation? It has many beneficial properties which promote good all-round health with little or no known side effects and for the price, green tea it?s definitely a herbal treatment that?s worth trying.

Weight Loss: Cause and Solution The Key to Successful Weight Loss Isn't a Miracle Pill or Plan

Losing weight isn't rocket science, but keeping it off can be more difficult that traveling to the moon. The key to successful weight loss isn't a miracle pill or plan; rather, it's a matter of determining why you're overweight and designing strategies that will counteract the cause of those extra pounds. Follow these guidelines to get on the right track to weight loss:

Why are You Overweight?
For successful weight loss, it's important to understand why you are overweight. You may have become sedentary, you may have a genetic predisposition to being heavy, you may eat for emotional reasons, or perhaps you're a triple-dipper and are overweight for all three reasons. Once you pinpoint the reason or reasons you're overweight, you can develop a weight loss approach that works for you.

Solving the Problem

If the pounds have crept on because you lead a sedentary lifestyle, it's time to get up off the couch and get moving! You don't have to become a gym rat, but you do have to start incorporating movement into your life. After getting a green light from your doctor, start with a brisk ten-minute walk three times each. When you're able to walk and hold a conversation without getting out of breath, you can increase the duration of your walks by ten-minute increments. Gradually add variety to your exercise routine, perhaps enrolling in a water aerobics class or even buying that gym membership. The key is to start slowly and find ways to move that are enjoyable for you. If you remain engaged and avoid boredom, you're more apt to stick with your program.

If your parents, grandparents, and/or siblings are overweight, you probably have a genetic tendency to carry excess weight. However, that doesn't mean weight loss is elusive. You may never be model-slim, but through dietary modifications and exercise, you can achieve the weight that's right for you. The key is to set realistic goals for yourself and to work a little bit harder to overcome your genes.

If you're overweight because you turn to food for solace, it's time to dig deeper. Start by keeping a journal and carrying it with you wherever you go. Each time you find yourself reaching for something to eat, identify the circumstances and what you're feeling. Note the date, time, your activity, and the feeling you're experiencing in your journal. Perhaps you're bored on a Saturday afternoon and grab a bag of chips to nosh on to fill the time. Maybe you're anxious about a deadline at work, and so reach for the candy dish on your desk. You could be mad at your sister for dumping the responsibility for your parents' anniversary party in your lap, so you swing through the fast food drive-through. After a week or two, review your journal entries and note any emotional patterns that emerge. Then come up with activities that you can use as substitutes for eating. If you eat out of boredom, for example, find a hobby that occupies both your mind and your hands. You won't be as likely to reach for the chips, and you'll cut out the extra calories in the process.

Regardless of the cause of your extra pounds, you can take concrete steps that will put you on the road to weight loss. And, because you're addressing the issues that led to you being overweight in the first place, you're more likely to keep the weight off.

How To Really Have A Good Night's Sleep Part One

Insomnia is a common sleep related problem which is more of a symptom of another disorder than a condition that stands on its own. Many people think it will not be cured once it occurs, but with the help of natural lifestyle changes and modifications to behavioral patterns there is hope to insomniacs around the world. Sleep medications could be one of them, but they could be habit-forming. Here are the ways on how to really have a good night's sleep.

I. Stimulus Control Therapy

Back in the days when our ancestors had no electricity, they would wake up up at sunrise and sleep at sunset. But the advent of technology and electricity extended the sleeping time of ma therefore, making him stay up in the night much longer. Now that they more obligations to attend to, TV shows to watch and other forms of entertainment, people are finding it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep for long.

Sleep experts suggest using your bed only for sleep and sex. If you can't fall asleep within the next 20 minutes from the time you close your eyes, immediately get up and go somewhere else. It is recommended that you designate a spot in the house where you can think about your problems so that you'll be able to associate it with them.

For some overly sensitive people, watching TV in their bedroom will prevent them from falling asleep. Don't ever watch TV or use the computer before bedtime as it will stimulate your visual cortex.

Darkness lures everyone to sleep. Experts suggest turning off the lights hours before sleep so your body starts winding down before you actually fall asleep.

Your bedroom must be free from any form of disturbance. It includes the noise, the lights and the temperature. Use blinds to cover the lights, and make sure you have proper ventilation so you won't wake up because it's hot.

Establish a regular sleep schedule and stick to it for a week. You can't expect to see results overnight, so stick to it until it becomes normal. Also, don't be panicky when you can't sleep at once. Counting the hours you've lost will only agitate your mind, so get rid of your clock if you can.

II. Cognitive Behavioral therapy

There are people who suffer from insomnia with the thought that they can't sleep without sleeping pills. These people are not only suffering from insomnia, but also from negative thoughts they created. Cognitive Behavioral therapy is designed to help

people identify these mental blocks and negative behaviors that keep them from sleeping. It involves a counselor who will teach you how to determine the root causes of your insomnia, how to deal with stressful episodes and how to create an inviting environment suitable for sleep. Many people undergoing this therapy, combined with lifestyle changes, have shown good results and have improved the quality of their sleep. To undergo this therapy, you can visit a sleep center and ask for help.

III. Relaxation

Other people have found remedy in various forms of relaxation that will help them wind down mentally to forget about the stressful situations they had for the day.

Meditation, breathing exercises, tai chi and yoga are all helpful in calming the mind and also bring health benefits. If you will do strenuous exercises, do them in the afternoon and not within 2-3 hours prior to sleep, as it will stimulate you.

There are herbal remedies that are reportedly good in inducing sleep. It includes lavender, chamomile, valerian, hops, Passion Flower and lemon balm. The most popular among them is probably valerian. Used by Europeans for decades, it is known as Nature's Valium for its relaxing effects. However, studies have cast doubts on its efficacy and results are inconclusive.

Any herbal remedy will not work if you consumed caffeinated drinks hours before bedtime. Teas, coffee, chocolate, and drugs must be avoided. Also, don't drink a lot of fluids for you might wake up to urinate. This is true to people with nocturia, though there are other remedies for it other than limiting the fluid intake.

Fad Diet Popularity

A common question among weight loss professionals...

If fad diets don't work,
why are they so popular?

People are often willing to try anything that promises to help them lose weight because they want to look or feel better. Regardless of what professionals would like to think, dieters want one thing...to fit in the clothes they wore two years ago. It rarely has anything to do with improving health. Fad diets exploit this fact and drive a multi-million dollar industry.

Quick and easy weight loss appeals to all dieters. The quick fix of a fad diet draws the attention of dieters almost effortlessly, while professionals struggle to spread the word about weight loss through long-term changes in eating habits and regular exercise. What can we do?

We continue to educate the public on the real science of weight loss and dieting. The diet basics of healthy weight loss must continue to be supported and taught by physicians, nurses, nutritionists, and other health care providers.

The Diet Basics of Healthy Weight Loss

  • Lose weight by losing fat (which excludes all quick weight loss plans)

  • Gain Muscle (keep the resting metabolic rate from dropping)

  • Practice good eating habits (that can keep you thin)
  • Fad diets also become popular because many of them do work for a short time. In many cases, this is because when you stop eating certain types of food or eat ?special? combinations of foods, you are getting fewer calories than you normally would. You are also paying more attention to what you are eating.

However, it?s likely that much of the weight you lose is from water and lean muscle, not body fat. Also, most people are not able to keep up with the demands of a diet that strictly limits their food choices or requires them to eat the same foods over and over again. People who use fad diets usually end up gaining back any weight that they lost.

Here are some simple guidelines for recognizing a fad diet:

    • Diets that claim to help you lose weight very quickly (more than 1 or 2 pounds per week). Remember, it took time for you to gain unwanted weight and it will take time to lose it.
    • Promise that you can lose weight and keep it off without giving up fatty foods or exercising on a regular basis. If a diet plan or product sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
    • Base claims on before and after photos, instead of solid evidence from clinical trials.
    • Offer testimonials from clients or experts in weight loss, science or nutrition. Remember that these people are probably being paid to advertise the diet plan or product.

If you want real testimonials, ask to read the reference page used when writing the diet.

    • Draw simple conclusions from complex medical research.
    • Limit your food choices and don't encourage you to get balanced nutrition by eating a variety of foods.
    • Require you to spend a lot of money on things like seminars, pills or prepackaged meals in order for the plan to work.
Let's keep fighting for the truth...the diet basics of healthy weight loss. At some point, the truth will be heard...I hope it's not too late for some.

    Dolphin Assisted Therapy

Originating in 1978 by Dr. David Nathanson, Dolphin Assisted Therapy (DAT) has been used as a therapeutic approach to increase speech and motor skills in patients who have been diagnosed with developmental, physical, and/or emotional disabilities, such as mental retardation, Down syndrome, and autism. It is suggested that the unconditional love and support a dolphin offers can benefit children and other mentally ill patients by helping them learn to develop trust. Many believe that dolphins have human-like emotions and the compassion that they're able to give increases self-confidence, social skills and academic achievement in children and others who may be lacking these skills.

Since its' introduction, dolphin assisted therapy has become a very controversial topic in the medical world. Theories such as the one by Nathanson suggest that dolphin assisted therapy is simply a program that works to modify behavior by rewarding the patient with dolphin swims for performing a desired function.

Scientists, however, are considering the possibility that the sonar of the dolphins can actually trigger the healing process by increasing T-cells and endorphins.

In some cases, scientists have suggested that dolphins actually have the ability to target areas in the human body with their sonar and repair damaged tissue.

DAT has been suggested for use in healing and pain relief as well as increasing attention span, enhancing learning, and increasing motor skills and coordination in children. While dolphin therapy seems to work best with children, it's also a popular therapy for handicapped adults.

Although no scientists claim to know exactly how it works and there is really no scientific data to back up their claims, dolphin assisted therapy is increasing in popularity and is being offered at several aquariums in the United States. At the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, for example, children can participate in several programs designed to modify their behaviors with rewards such as swimming with and feeding the dolphins. These programs, however, come with a hefty price tag that can range anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000 for 5 or 6 days.

Those critical of DAT, however, argue that simply buying a child a small pet will have the same effect and some actually argue that holding dolphins in captivity for what they deem ?strictly recreational purposes? should be considered cruelty to animals. Scientists also doubt the ability of a dolphin to sense and target specific tissue with their sonar. The absence of any scientific data to prove these claims is referred to often in the scientific community.

While research into the validity of dolphin assisted therapy continues, it is cautioned that DAT is not a miracle cure and any organization promising such should be avoided. If you're interested in reading more on dolphin assisted therapy, the links below provide some excellent information on available programs.

Antibiotics as a Cure for Stomach Ulcer

Stomach ulcer refers to open lesions and ulcerations at the level of the stomach. Statistics indicate that more than two percent of the people in the United States are diagnosed with stomach ulcer each year and it is estimated that around eight to ten percent of these people are at risk of developing various other forms of ulcer over the years. In the United States there are approximately half a million annual cases of stomach ulcer. The disorder has the highest incidence in the male gender, and it predominantly affects people with ages over 50.

Stomach ulcer is considered to be a serious disorder. In the absence of medical treatment, stomach ulcer can lead to complications such as stomach perforation and internal bleeding. There are many forms of treatment for stomach ulcer in present. However, the problem with most medications is that they only provide temporary symptomatic relief, allowing the disorder to reoccur soon after completing the prescribed medical treatment.

Stomach ulcer is a digestive disorder that occurs due to physiological abnormalities (poor stomach production of bicarbonate, poor integrity of the stomach?s mucosal protective cover, inappropriate mucosal blood flow, overproduction of pepsin and gastric acid) and infection with bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. Although these bacteria are known to be a major cause of stomach ulcer, most doctors neglect this aspect and only prescribe medications for normalizing the stomach?s production of digestive fluids. Although antacids and other medications commonly used in the treatment for stomach ulcer can keep the disorder under control, they can?t overcome the ulcer completely. Unless the treatment with antacids is followed on a regular basis, the symptoms of stomach ulcer are very likely to reoccur.

One of the most common medications used in the treatment for stomach ulcer is Tagamet. This ulcer drug acts by reducing the levels of gastric acid and pepsin inside the stomach. The problem with Tagamet and other antacids is that they only provide short-term effects. Most people affected by stomach ulcer experience a relapse of the disorder soon after interrupting the treatment with Tagamet.

Since the underlying cause of stomach ulcer is infection with Helicobacter pylori, people with the disorder should also receive a medical treatment with antibiotics. Research results indicate that people with stomach ulcer who have been prescribed a course of antibiotics such as amoxicillin or penicillin have experienced a considerable amelioration of their ulcer. In addition, most people with stomach ulcer who have followed treatments with antibiotics have been permanently cured. Unlike antacids, antibiotics can provide long-term effects for people affected by stomach ulcer, thus minimizing the chances of relapse.

A two-week course of amoxicillin is usually sufficient for overcoming the infection with Helicobacter pylori. Corroborated with antacids, antibiotic treatments can successfully cure stomach ulcers, minimizing the chances of relapse.

5 Element Theory: A Logical Myth

I was talking to a group about how 5 Element Theory is at the 'root' of Oriental medicine, when someone said, 5 Element Theory is a myth. Somewhat eager for an argument, this person seemed surprised when I agreed with him, and paraphrasing Joseph Campbell, I said: ?A real myth is true.?

Try Oriental medicine and within several weeks you'll 'know' if it's working for you.

    A Myth Is A Truth
As Joseph Campbell explained throughout his long career as a teacher, ?myth? reaches far back into humanity's past, and deep into our current collective unconsciousness. Through its guises of tale, lore, legend, and story, myth presents us with the ?facts of life,? but not in the linear, rational way we're accustomed to receiving information, but rather wrapped in metaphor and poetic perspective. Learning that begins with a thought, and understood with a feeling.

    A Diagnostic Model
The 5 Element Theory of Oriental Medicine is a diagnostic model, discovered in 'pre-scientific' times and understood today by using your mind, to 'recognize' the defined relationships laid out in the 5 Element matrix, and then ? after working with an Oriental medicine practitioner to determine what adjustments in your 'lifestyle' are needed to address your health issues ? 'feeling' if your problem is being corrected. As the folk wisdom says: The proof is in the pudding; does it taste good or not? Are you getting better or not? That's what's most important to your body. And for your mind: it is much more credible when it can say, I know, rather than I believe. And the way to know if something is improving your health is to 'feel' it.

    Try Oriental Medicine
When you try the Oriental medicine approach to health and well-being, within a period of several weeks you'll 'know' if it's working for you; and whether or not you 'believe' in why it's working won't make any difference at all, because you'll be enjoying your pudding.

    Exercise and the Time Clock

I have to admit that I sometimes find it amusing when someone knows I am a trainer and proceeds to elaborate on the hours that they spend in the gym. One example was a few years back when I was introduced to a nice young women, who proceeded to tell me that she went to the gym twice a day, an hour each time. Unless this second hour was spent in the jacuzzi or making up for lost time due to chatting with fellow gym-goers during the earlier timeslot, I would be leary. Instead of being impressed by her exuberant enthusiasm for working out, my thoughts were that one of those hours might be better spent in a counseling office. Excessive exercising is unsafe and a sign of other deep-rooted problems. So, the question remains how many ticks on the clock should pass before you head for the locker room? And what compels a person to go way overboard in their exercise routine?

First off, if you are one of our valued clients, you already know that the Mom Looks Great program utilizes the thirty to forty-five minute workout. If you have even an inkling of exercise information in your noodle, you atleast know that even twenty minutes a day can benefit your heart. So why are some people intent on doing more, especially when there are serious consequences?

The most common problem with over-exercising is injury to muscles and joints. The idea of regular exercise is to appropriately stress the muscle during exercise. This stress places small tears in the muscle, which upon repair, grow in size and strength, also known as hypertrophy. When the muscle is over-exercised, it goes beyond what is appropriate and can actually damage the muscle. Common areas of injury are legs, feet, back and shoulders as well as joints problems that include knees, ankles, elbows and wrists. This can lead to a lifetime of recurring injuries.

Another negative consequence to over-exercising is the compulsion that usually accompanies it. Eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia and other body starving diet tactics are dangerous enough. When you add an addiction of too much exercise to an already detrimental dieting tendency, you are left with the possibility of heart damage from insufficient fuel and nutrients to sustain the workout. While the aforementioned health issues are serious enough, an individual can also develop frequent headaches, loss of coordination and various stomach problems.

Over-exercising is not a physical disorder. While it will affect you physically, it is more of a symptom of depression or other mental illness. And if you think about it, over-exercising, eating disorders, feelings of inadequacy due to poor body image, poor judgment when evaluating priorities are all symptoms of depression. The bottom line here is when your choices begin to compromise your health, happiness or safety it is time to seek out effective counseling.

A lifestyle incorporating exercise is nothing but beneficial in many aspects. People exercise with a goal in mind whether it is to feel better, defuse stress or build muscle. Luckily, in addition to using an appropriate weight (intensity) during your workout, over-exercising can easily be detected with a simple time evaluation. I advise my clients not to go beyond one hour a day five days a week in a formal gym-type setting; and that is extremely generous. It is also easily controlled when you follow a specific routine. With the Mom Looks Great Fitness Program, you are guided to work different parts of your body throughout the week and have a variety of activities within your exercise regime. And just for good measure, remember that you cannot possibly overdo it by simply strolling your baby in the park or games of tag with your preschoolers. These forms of exercise are most welcome any time.

Water Diet Sodas And Weight Loss

What on earth does water have to do with weight loss? Actually, a lot more than you previously imagined.

Are you aware that some studies have shown that your brain cannot distinguish between hunger and thirst? Sometimes when your body is telling you that you are thirsty, your brain may be hearing that you are hungry. So what do you do? You put food in your mouth when a glass of water might have been sufficient. Most food has calories, most water doesn't. Simple equation. 'Nuff said on that topic.

By the way, ever wake up in the middle of the night and crave a snack? Nine times out of ten, a glass of water will do the trick. I know, I didn't believe it either until I tried it. It really works!

Tissue, muscle, cells, even blood are all comprised to a large per cent of water. When your brain starts getting signals that water is needed...well, remember the confusion factor mentioned above? We eat something instead of giving our body what it really craves and needs! Your entire body works much better, by the way, when the fluid levels are kept up where they need to be.

BUT I DRINK LOTS OF LIQUID AND STILL GAIN WEIGHT!

Sure you do, but what KIND of liquid. I won't even talk about sodas, coffee, or tea sweetened with sugar. I'm going to assume that you already know that sugar is not the way to go if you want to lose weight, but what about the artificially sweetened drinks?

    Did you know...

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS CAN CAUSE YOU TO GAIN WEIGHT?

Some studies have shown that using artificial sweeteners can contribute to weight gain in at least two ways.

First, there is the confusion factor. When you use artificial sweeteners, you, and your brain, become confused about the calorie content of the food you eat. You may actually find yourself eating more in an effort to satisfy an internal urge or interpretation, and this urge may be related to the assumed fact that the sweet soda you just drank didn't have that many calories, so neither does this cinnamon roll. Actually, before artificial sweeteners, our bodies and brains were pretty good at relating calorie content to food based on the sweetness.

    A WORD FOR PARENTS!

Our bodies' understanding of sweetness and the development of the internal calorie estimating apparatus mentioned above apparently occurs in childhood. Early use of artificial sweeteners could cause the grown-up years later to ingest more of sweet foods than they should.

The second way in which artificial sweeteners may contribute to weight gain is what could be called...

    THE SUGAR TRAP!

Your body is a complicated device which has developed a huge number of inter-related, synergistic, stimulus sensing and automatic response mechanisms. It has learned to begin things happening inside when something sweet is detected. The digestive system is prepared to receive a certain type of fuel...which it welcomes! When you ingest food or drink which has been artificially sweetened, all your little hormones, glands, cells, and systems begin asking, What's going on? Like prisoners in an old movie, they start rattling their tin cups and yelling out, FEED ME! Oh yeah, that was the plant in Little Shop Of Horrors, wasn't it?

Anyway, your internal messengers are now not very happy, nor will they be until you send down some calories for them to munch on. See the trap? It reminds me of when I managed a restaurant when people would order a salad and diet drink and then smother the salad in high-calorie, high-fat dressing and have ice cream for dessert. Get the picture.

WAIT! IT MIGHT EVEN BE WORSE!

Artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than ordinary sugar, and that's why you can sweeten a cup of coffee with one little white pill. However, there are some studies which indicate that artificial sweeteners become somewhat addictive. If that isn't bad enough, this brings us to one of the most popular drugs in America...

    CAFFEINE

Even though a lot of people who want to lose weight are drinking artificially sweetened drinks, a lot of these drinks - coffee, tea, sodas - contain caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic. It dehydrates you, causing your body to lose water. Remember, water = good. When you are dehydrated, low on internal liquid, your metabolism slows down. This means your body gets by on fewer calories and stores the rest as fat. Think it through: You get dehydrated, you get thirsty. You just drank a cup of tea, coffee, or soda, so you can't be thirsty, can you? Since your brain can't really tell the difference between hunger and thirst signals, it tells you to eat something when all that's really going on is that you need a drink of water.

    SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?

    1. Substitute water for most of the other stuff you're drinking.

    2. Buy your artificially sweetened drinks. My wife came up with this idea, but I have seen it used in other contexts as well. If you drink an artificially sweetened drink and/or one with caffeine, buy it back with at least an equivalent sized drink of water. Eight ounces of coffee? Follow it with eight ounces of water.

    3. Is water boring for you? Then try flavoring your water with lemon or something else. Use herbal teas that have their own flavor and might not even need to be sweetened.

    4. Include soups and juices in your diet. These are high liquid content. Just be aware that while nutritionally better for you than diet drinks or drinks with caffeine, they DO contain calories.

    5. Can't do without sweetened drinks? Try stevia. This is a natural food additive available online and at most health food stores. While it has a sweetening effect, the FDA does not allow it to be called or marketed as a sweetener. Due to its chemical makeup, it does not seem to produce the cravings for more food as do other non-sugar sweeteners. I read that in a book, but I tried Stevia and that's how it worked for me. I was drinking four to eight cups of coffee sweetened with artificial sweeteners a day, and munching tons of snacks as I drank the coffee! I started using stevia, and the desire for constant snacking went away. I will warn you, while technically VERY sweet, it does have an acquired taste. I figure if I could get used to it, anybody could. It's the only sweetener in our house now.

Capsulized Food: The Next Step in Food Evolution

Anyone who has spent a day fasting from food, or who has even skipped a meal, knows just how much time we save when we are not provisioning and consuming meals. Of course, efficiency is not our only concern when it comes to eating. If we were to articulate our fundamental requirements for food, we would probably come up with the following: (1) it should give us the nutrition our bodies need (2) it should support our body transformation goals (e.g. lose fat or gain muscle) (3) it should taste good (4) it should be convenient. Foods that meet two or three of these requirements quickly become a mainstay in most diets.

A new development in nutrition research called ?capsulized food? aims to exceed these requirements. Pennsylvania-based Protica Research is the first of what will likely be many companies dabbling in this new food frontier. Among other development initiatives on their roster, Protica Research engineers liquid foods that are ultra-compact, nutrient-dense, and above all else, very palatable. Their first product, Profect?, delivers 25 grams of protein and the complete spectrum of water-soluble vitamins in less than three fluid ounces. This on-the-go nutrition has some consumers re-thinking their traditional eating habits. An examination of the four fundamental requirements for food will help explain why.

    NUTRIENT DENSITY

Nutrition. It is our first priority when it comes to eating. While it is not always on the front of our minds when we reach for food, it is the reason we eat. There are many nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor foods available to us, and we must always consume our fair share of nutrient-rich foods for the sake of our health, well-being and energy level.

The challenge is that nutrient-dense foods?such as milk, eggs, fish, and chicken?are not always within arms reach. Snacks, junk food and fast food generally are. It often takes too much effort for a busy person to procure the necessary vitamins and protein, and so we end up going without. This can hurt us in the long run as our immune system and energy levels suffer. Studies have shown that many of the so-called ?junk food junkies? and ?fast food addicts? would prefer eating nutritionally sound foods if they were within arm?s reach.

SUPPORTING BODY TRANSFORMATION GOALS For many of us, we keep a careful eye on the foods we eat. Either we are trying to lose fat, gain muscle, or maintain what we have. Whether we are browsing the supermarket aisles or a restaurant menu, we find ourselves looking for foods that are consistent with these goals.

For some, low-carbohydrate foods are at the top of the shopping list. These consumers have become more aware of the health risks and weight gain associated with eating carbohydrate-rich foods. For others, low-fat foods are the order of the day. Still others seek a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

The common denominator in all of these diets is protein, along with the supporting micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals.

While it is possible to get vitamins and protein without fat or carbohydrates when you are cooking at home, it is a much taller order to do that in a compact transportable meal. Manufacturers like EAS and Protica Research offer high protein beverages to support any transformation goals. Protica?s Profect provides a full 25 grams of protein and the complete spectrum of water-soluble vitamins. The important point for the diet conscious, however, is that all of these nutrients come without the cost of fat and carbohydrates. This allows your body to maintain health and energy without weighing you down with unnecessary carbohydrates or fat.

    TASTE

For most of us, the taste of a product determines whether we make it part of our dietary regimen. No amount of nutrition can make up for a poor taste. Food manufacturers have learned this lesson well in recent years, as many nutritious products have been pulled from supermarket shelves due to lackluster taste. As consumer expectations have continued to rise, a plethora great-tasting and nutritious food products have entered the market. Capitalizing on this fact, Protica Research developed a line of flavors for its capsulized protein beverage that target age groups from adolescents to seniors. Double-blind taste tests have shown that the flavor profile of Profect is indistinguishable from non-carbonated fruit drinks on the market.

    CONVENIENCE

Every once in a while, maybe even every evening, we want to sit down to a well-set table and share a meal with family or friends. Capsulized food is not about taking this important ritual out of our lives, and it is not about replacing fresh foods. The reality of living in the 21st century is that most people spend their day working, and this means the kitchen or garden is inaccessible. This is true for stay-at-home moms as well as business executives putting in long days at the office.

This on-the-go lifestyle is not compatible with eating nutritious meals. The difficulty of finding time for a proper meal has led many people to become dependent upon compact snack or junk foods that they can keep in their purse or briefcase. These compact foods have become a mainstay of the American diet because they are portable and can be consumed quickly. However we often find that the portability, and thus the convenience, of these foods is lacking. The traditional convenience foods that we can find in grocery and convenience stores are not generally packaged with rough transportation in mind. The packaging of many food and beverage products accidentally break open after they have spent time in a bag or purse.

Another common complaint surfaces once the packaging is opened. Many convenience foods?meal replacement bars, for example?are sticky or crumbly. You can also find yourself reaching for water to wash them down. Problem is, convenience should mean ?napkins and water not required?.

While portability and quick consumption are two things that we have come to look for in a convenient food, these traits are often illusive.

Protica Research offers two innovations when it comes to convenience. First, their Profect protein beverage is a liquid?and weighs less than three fluid ounces?which means that you can quickly and easily consume it even while on the run. Second, Profect takes portability to a new level by packaging it in a patent-pending, virtually unbreakable container. This means that it can be taken absolutely anywhere, and you will not have to worry about your meal ending up all over your purse or briefcase.

HOW TO MEET OUR MODERN NUTRITION NEEDS

The advent of health-consciousness has come at a time when our lifestyles are increasingly hectic. This means that people are looking for a healthy, nutritious, and portable food that is quick to consume. In order to meet this demand, the food industry must adapt and respond. Companies like Protica Research are developing capsulized foods that will deliver on-the-go nutrition that is more portable, more convenient and more palatable than its predecessors.

Laser Hair Removal: How to Buy Used Equipment

If you are the owner of a laser hair removal clinic you know that the cost of the equipment is a costly expense that can set you back thousands and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars. Thanks to the growing industry and demand for such techniques the supply and demand curve is favoring the manufacturers who are raising their prices to take advantage of the hot market. However there exists an alternative to helping keep costs under the control through using brokers and clearance houses to buy used equipment and save substantial amounts of money.

As with any business, laser hair removal clinics come and go. Some flourish while other close up shop for a variety of reasons. Often you can buy their hair removal equipment for a fraction of the price it originally sold for as new. Many specialized brokers exist in the market that can help you with such a purpose for a small percentage fee. Because of the delicate nature of this equipment you want to be careful that anything you purchase that has been previously in service can continue to deliver the safety and precision needed.

Brokers routinely buy up the inventory of defunct clinics and recalibrate and test the equipment. Many times they will also go to the expense of having the equipment re-certified. When choosing a broker to buy such equipment from you should be careful to only deal with those who are employ certification techniques to make sure you are getting the best possible equipment. Remember, no matter how cheap equipment might be if it causes harm or damage the legal ramifications can be staggering. Never forget that you get what you pay for!

    Red Raspberry Seed Oil

Someone asked me the other day, 'Emily, what oil are you most excited about?' Certainly a thought provoking question; one that I wouldn't even be able to answer ordinarily. At the risk of sounding like an info-mercial, I'm going to tell you that I am excited about Raspberry Seed Oil.

Oilseeds are processed in huge quantities in commercial processing facilities with significant downtime for cleaning between different kinds of seeds. Because these tiny seeds yield very little oil by commercial standards for oilseeds and need to be processed carefully to preserve their identity, they are only being processed on the very small scale. At this time, manufacturers are making a small profit from something that was once waste material. Some initial laboratory analysis is available and much is pending. I think that this oil will increase in price when the potential for profit is proven.

This oil is truly a nutraceutical. The tiny seeds of Raspberries are from organically grown plants and are cold pressed. The relatively small amount of oil produced is full of good stuff for your skin. This is an oil that I would take as a supplement. I am actually making the yummiest salads using Red Raspberry Seed Oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, sea salt and a drop or two of essential oil of a culinary herb such as Oregano or Basil. It is 83% essential fatty acids. Lenoleic, alpha-lenolenic, oleic, omega 3 and omega 6, tocopherols, tocotrienols, carotenoides, vaccinic, ellagic and steariodonic acids, are all familiar to the health conscious consumer.

The high levels of Vitamin A (carotenoids) give this oil a bright orange color. Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin. It speeds the healing of damaged skin and is used for skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis.

The very high levels of Vitamin E (tocotrienols, alpha and gamma- tocopherols make this oil quite an anti-oxidant. All tocopherols are effective against particular kinds of free radicals. Using a product that contains mixed tocopherols allows for broad protection. The role of Vitamin E in human health has not yet been fully explored. All of this Vitamin E means that this oil is stable and will most likely act as a preservative if added to other vegetable oils that tend to oxidize quickly.

Raspberry Seed Oil has significant anti-inflammatory properties. It is effective when used for dermal conditions such as rashes and eczema. The incorporation of an oil with such properties into the diet could have huge potential.

Red Raspberry Oil contains variable amounts of Ellagic Acid. Initial studies reveal that Ellagic acid concentrations range from 0.06 to 0.32 mg/g in the seed oil. Ellagic acid is an anti-carcinogenic and anti-mutagenic as well as being anti-bacterial and anti-viral.

Most surprising is that this oil actually has an SPF rating ranging from 28 to 50.

Red Raspberry Seed Oil can be ordered from Emily's Oils & Essentials.

I grew up across the street from the Village Sauna and up the hill from the American River in Fair Oaks, California. Native plants and salves and tinctures were ever present. Victoria Edwards was a massage therapist at the Sauna and lived next door to us on Harmony Hill. Her handmade massage blends of the 70's grew into Leydet Aromatics, a world-wide supplier of essential oils and aromatherapy supplies recognized for quality and customer service. I began working for Leydet in 1995, years of focused learning and growth followed. When Victoria began a sabbatical in Southern France in 2004, there became a need for a restructuring of the business that she had built. Out of this, Emily's Oils and Essentials was born; a company dedicated to continuing the legacy of Leydet by serving customers in the spirit of healing and the rightful use of plants. I intend to provide a seamless transition for loyal Leydet customers and to continue to introduce people to the sensory pleasures and healing properties of nature's gifts.

Turn Your Body into a 24hr Fat Burning Furnace and Still Build Muscle!

    Is this even possible?

Well hold on to your seat because you are about to learn a whole new way of doing cardio and burning fat that will turn your body into a fat burning machine and still pack on the muscle.

I have been working on natural bodybuilding for the last 3 years, and it has taken me 2 and a half years to realize I was going about it completely the wrong way. I am sure you have all been there before. Atkins, low carb, low calorie, low fat, low anything you can name.

Sure some of it works but I noticed that when I was trying to loose excess fat from a bulking season and become shredded for summer I would loose between 10 and 15 pounds of muscle. Surely there had to be a better way?

Well what I found out revolutionized not only the intensity, results and gains from my normal workouts but took my fat burning to a completely new level.

It is a common belief that by doing cardio sessions for 30 and 40 minutes at a time is the ultimate zone for fat burning. THEY ARE WRONG.

What I learnt next shocked me to the very core.

You can burn more fat, loose less muscle and actually still gain muscle with 16 minutes of cardiovascular training a day. So how do you achieve this amazing feat?

MAX OT training style and more importantly MAX OT cardio.

You see there is something special about the entire way MAX OT has been designed, it works for maximum overload, maximum intensity to deliver you the results that you desire.

I can honestly say that it has done more then I expected for me then any other training program ever has. I was able to add 40 pounds to my bench press and 80 pounds to my squat in about 2 months, not to mention dropping 4 percent body in fat.

At one part in Max-OT cardio the following is quoted ?Remember, no more old fashion cardio. You are stepping up. You are entering an advanced cardio training dimension. A dimension few athletes are familiar with. After a few weeks of Max-OT Cardio, your view cardio training will never be the same. All your previous cardiovascular training will seem like a walk in the park and a waste of time. You will then realize how inefficient and ineffective ?conventional cardio? is. More importantly, you?ll be establishing a metabolism akin to a Colorado wildfire.?

And it is completely true. You are entering a new dimension with your training.

There are so many more benefits to the Max OT program that I won?t discuss in this article because the list just goes on and on. You can visit their site at http://www.ast-ss.com

Basically if you want to build more muscle then you ever have before and become cut and shredded for summer. Max-OT is the program for you.

Acne Remedy: What Worked for My Acne was the Drugfree Way (part 1)

There are over 50 million people in America alone who suffer from this image debilitating skin disorder known as acne but I am glad to say, that estimate has lost a count and it is my hope that many more will find success at being excluded from that list.

I suffered from acne for over a decade of my life and this lingered way into adulthood, thus it wasn?t just a ?puberty thing?. Imagine not being able to look in the mirror with ease, having to look down when speaking to people, hating to take photos and hang out with friends and family, all because of one crises: Acne.

Well, not anymore, I?ve been successful at getting rid of my pimples with simple methods and the aim of this article is to show acne sufferers how to achieve similar results naturally and in about a week?or less!

Believe me, I tried the famous acne remedy product on TV that I?m sure every and any acne patient has heard of and probably tried to no avail. I even went as far as considering plastic surgery, that?s how desperate I was but as the saying goes: ?The best things in life are FREE?even when it comes to an acne remedy.?

Characterized by bumps, excessively oily or dry skin, spots and embarrassing eruptions, acne remains a terrible skin disorder that sadly permits for exploitation from the many marketers and charlatans out to make a fast buck on the expense of the vulnerable. Even the so called natural approaches of acne treatment aimed at treating acne from within, are unrealistic, impractical and often pricey or are just the same one-dimensional gimmick cures disguised as holistic solutions.

That said I will now outline the natural, common sense, and very inexpensive methods for a successful acne remedy naturally.

Acne Remedy: Internal Measures to take for Acne control

First and foremost, for not just overcoming this skin disorder, but for your all around health, you have to seriously consider making a change in your diet. ?You are what you eat.? If your diet consists of only junk and fast foods, you are only wreaking havoc on your entire system of visceral organs ranging from the digestive tract to the excretory organs. That said; make it a point to adhere to eating what has been coined in the drugless fraternity as ?the Mucus-Less/Alkaline Diet? which is made up of mostly Organic Seasonal Fruits, Fruit, Root and Leafy vegetables and as needed pure filtered water.

Not only will this simple change in diet make for a clearer and smoother skin, it will also give the added benefit of improved health and overall wellness. A basic format for a suggested diet regimen when using the components listed above will be in the next installment of ?Acne Remedy: what worked for my acne was the drug-free way?

    Managing Your Weight

Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to determine overweight and obesity. Body Mass Index is a figure which is calculated by using a persons weight and height. An adult person with BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 is considered overweight and an adult person with BMI 30 or higher is consiedered obese. For most people, body mass index correlates with the amount of body fat. However, BMI does't directly measure body fat.

There are two causes for obesity:

    1. Obesity resulting from excess fat and

    2. Obesity resulting from water and waste product deposits.

Obesity resulting from excess fat is due when we take in more calories than we consume. If we don't exercise and we eat lots of food which contains lots of fat and sugar, then we don't consume enough calories.

Obesity resulting from water and waste product deposits happens when the balance between acids and alkalines in our body is disturbed. If we eat lots of food which produce acids (meat, coffee, sausages), our body starts to buffer the acids with minerals and stores them with water.

In this process, the fat cells work as trash cans.

If we want to lose weight effectively, the first thing to do is togo through a thorough deacidification of the body. When our body has lost acids and waste deposits properly , we can prevent metabolic products from being stored again.

When we pay attention to the both forms of obesity - obesity resulting from excess fat and obesity resulting from water and waste product deposits - we can loose weight with permanent results. There is no weight loss without loosing toxins and acids!

Today, we take in more energy and calories than we consume. There is more food available than before and our everyday life requires less physical activity than before.

Nowadays we do not simply need as much energy as our ancestors did. Also, our society has turned very food centered compared with the time of our ancestors: today food is more and more considered to be a source of enjoyment rather than a source of survival.

    Secrets of Successful Yoga Studios

What will happen if you are a competent, talented, and compassionate Yoga teacher, without enough dedicated students? Here is a simple answer: Don?t quit your ?day job? and don?t open a Yoga studio of your own. Sorry to be so blunt, but you need time to grow your following.

When, or if, you develop a following as an independent contractor, then and only then, think about opening a Yoga center. This is not meant to be harsh, but there are enough Yoga centers with poor business skills to go around, and you don?t need to lose every penny you saved without developing sound business plans.

Therefore, please take time to develop a Yoga business plan with goals and estimated time frames. Unfortunately, I have seen too many Yoga studios open with a ?one month plan.? Can you imagine opening an ashram without a telephone, getting caught up in zoning board complications, or just hoping for the best? One poorly organized Yoga studio makes all Yoga teachers look bad, and leaves the public thinking every Yoga studio is like that.

How do you feel when you go to a deli for the 20th time and the counter help tries to avoid you? Do you feel like going back again, when, half the time, they get your order wrong? Where am I going with this?

Every Yoga studio should have an appointed person for customer service and public relations. Yoga teachers should know all of their students? names ?by heart.? If you ignore your Yoga students, there is no reason for them to stay. They will feel unwelcome and unworthy. One of the worst ways to handle a student / teacher relationship is to ignore a Yoga student.

Be careful of perceptions that make you feel like you are better than your Yoga students. Remember that your students pay you to teach Yoga. You should treat them like your best friends. How many of your friends are paying for your meals, car, mortgage, or your vacations? Your Yoga students are ?number one.?

Doing the ?little extras,? keeps Yoga students. When a student has a question, it is your job to give an informed answer; and if you do not have one, consult with a senior or master Yoga teacher. If you are not a ?people person,? do not become a Yoga teacher.

Make sure that the person who answers your phone loves people. You can?t keep a Yoga studio open with a grumpy receptionist. The receptionist is the initial ?gate keeper? of a Yoga studio, and for Yoga students, that gate should be held open with a wide smile.

Each Yoga studio should be a haven for students to find what they seek, without putting up with inferior service. They face far too much of it, outside the Yoga class. You should know the needs of your students and promise only what you can deliver.
